Garth Tander will be back racing next year – but whether it’s in Supercars, full-time or in another category remains a mystery.

The 2007 Supercars champion closed out a near 10-year chapter at Holden Racing Team with pole position and a second-place finish in the season’s final race at the Sydney 500 on Sunday.

It also brings down the curtain on the team’s 26 years as a factory-backed outfit.

“It’s a nice way to put a full stop on the HRT period of my life,” Tander said.

“The last couple of events have been pretty strong, so getting pole and second today was probably about as good as you could hope for.”

After going through a “bit of a lull” in recent years, particularly in qualifying, Tander said it was nice to see results this weekend.

It was his first pole position since 2012.

“I’ve been able to prove to myself that I’m capable of continuing to do the job,” he said.

“I’ll go to sleep pretty comfortably tonight.”

The 39-year-old confirmed he had not secured a deal going into the off-season, though signalled he wasn’t far off.

But he kept tight-lipped about his next move.

There’s speculation he will join Garry Rogers Motorsport, potentially filling the spot left vacant by Scott McLaughlin who is joining DJR Team Penske.

“I expect that, if we can put the deal together that I’m working on, we will be in a very strong car and capable winning races and another crack at a championship.”
