Fords scorch Darwin Supercars qualifying

Ford star Scott McLaughlin has secured provisional pole position for Sunday’s Supercars sprint in Darwin.

DJR Team Penske look set to continue their dominance at Hidden Valley Raceway, with series leader Fabian Coulthard qualifying second fastest in a reversal of the one-two result from Saturday’s opening race.

McLaughlin shaded his teammate with a scorching lap of 1min 5.6806sec as he qualified fastest for Sunday’s 72-lap race.

Red Bull Racing’s Jamie Whincup was third-fastest while Erebus driver David Reynolds was happy to be fourth with an impressive final lap.

Whincup’s teammate and reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen was sixth, while fellow Triple Eight Racing driver Craig Lowndes put himself in the top 10 shootout by finishing eighth.

Garth Tander, who was 19th, avoided a high-speed crash with Alex Rullo after the 17-year-old pulled out in front of the Holden veteran as he exited the pits.

The leading 10 drivers will battle it out in a shootout at 11am local time (11.30am AEST) to lock in the grid positions for the afternoon race starting at 1.30pm (2pm).
