Gaulois breaks duck with win at Rosehill

Godolphin colt Gaulois has finally opened his account at the fifth attempt with an all-the-way win in the TAB Handicap at Rosehill.

The two-year-old jumped cleanly from barrier one and dictated terms under Brenton Avdulla throughout the 1350m trip on Saturday.

Hualalai made a brief surge on the home straight but the $2.80 Luxbet favourite maintained control to score by a length on a heavy 8.

“All his runs have been good and there’s a little bit of form around the horses that have beaten him. He deserved a win,” Godolphin stable representative Paul Reid said.

Avdulla was impressed after he held off the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Hualalai ($3.50).

“He hasn’t been far away every time. It’s taken some decent horses to beat him,” he said, reeling off Trekking, Envy Of All and Goodfella.

“The 1400 suits, he gets through the ground really well and once I was able to control the speed I was always confident he was going to take some running down.

“He doesn’t give me the feel of a topliner but he feels like he’s genuine, tough, he puts himself on speed. He’s probably going to go further than where he should be.”
