Ford left in Red Bull wake again

Just two podiums out of the V8 Supercars meet at Symmons Plains might be seen as a worrying result for Prodrive Australia, but not to Chaz Mostert.

The leading Ford team came to Tasmania on its biggest high in many meets after a dominant display at the Australian Grand Prix.

Mostert and team-mate Mark Winterbottom locked out the front row in qualifying and managed four straight one-two results at Albert Park.

While receiving no points for the non-championship round, it was supposed to have heralded a new start for the pair in their new Falcon FG X.

But come the Tasmanian round, it was the same old story with Red Bull Racing in control.

Craig Lowndes and series leader Jamie Whincup took the race wins but Mostert urged Ford fans not to be disheartened.

Mostert said the big plus was the podiums and the pace but his engineers had plenty of tinkering to do ahead of the Perth round of the championship.

“The hard tyre all weekend led us down a garden path but put the soft tyre on and the car was a rocketship,” he said.

“On the hard, we need to do some work.

“We got a couple of podiums this weekend we weren’t really expecting.”

Mostert finished fifth, 12th and second across the weekend, with Winterbottom in second, sixth and fifth.

At least Mostert showed he’d matured in his racing approach in the final stages of the 200km race.

Instead of pushing his car to the limits to try and make up a gap to Whincup that had narrowed to almost two seconds, he decided to bank the points.

“I was just a bit worried about doing most of the race on soft tyres,” he said.

“I didn’t want to have a blowout in such a good position.”

There was less good news for DJR Team Penske, with Scott Pye unable to finish higher than 17th all weekend after replacing Marcos Ambrose in the team’s sole Falcon.

While Pye’s team hailed “solid results” and “good finishes” it seems the strongly-backed car has a long way to go to challenge at the top end of the field.
