Henry Dwyer has a full plate this weekend as his stable juggles final preparations for star sprinter Asfoora’s Royal Ascot campaign and a heavy-track opportunity for mudlark Wuddzz in Sydney.
Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1000m) winner Asfoora will have her final serious gallop at Flemington on Friday as she gears up for a return to the world stage next month. Dwyer is hoping the hit-out sharpens her up after what he described as a “flat run” in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville last month.
Meanwhile, Dwyer will be in Sydney where Wuddzz, a gelding who relishes wet ground, tackles the P F Civil Handicap (2400m) at Randwick.
“He is a deadset mudlark,” Dwyer said. “Every time he finds a wet track, he just about wins. We’ve been waiting two years for it to be this wet.”
Wuddzz was a last-start winner at Warrnambool on a Soft 6 and shapes as a key contender with Randwick expecting up to 70mm of rain between Thursday and Friday. A heavy track rating looks likely come race day.
“2400 metres is spot on for him and even better that it’s wet,” Dwyer added.
Purchased for just NZ$600 in an online auction, Wuddzz has proven to be an astute buy. Since joining Dwyer’s Ballarat stable, he has won five races and earned over $205,000 from 31 starts.
He is rated a $6 chance for Saturday’s Randwick assignment, with Dylan Gibbons taking the ride.
