Trainer Michael Lane is aiming to round out a successful campaign with a final win for standout mare The Boss Lady in Saturday’s Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) at Belmont before turning attention to the Ascot carnival later in the year.
The Boss Lady kicked off her preparation with an impressive win in the Roma Cup (1100m), followed by a solid sixth in the Quokka (1200m). Most recently, she finished a closing fifth in the Northam Stakes (1300m) behind exciting three-year-old West Star.
“It was a good run, maybe a bit disappointing the last 50m,” Lane said on Tabradio. “But that’s probably me being too hard on her. She got too far back and did well to finish where she did.”
Heading into the Belmont Sprint, Lane believes West Star is again the benchmark, firming from $3.30 into $2.80 favouritism with Tabtouch. Western Empire sits at $4.80, with The Boss Lady third in betting at $7.50.
“West Star looked pretty dominant. I hadn’t seen him before, but he’s a cracking type,” Lane said. “Still, we’ve drawn well, and that could be key. She’ll be in a better position and she’s come through her runs well.”
The Boss Lady has drawn barrier six, with Shaun McGruddy picking up the ride as Joe Azzopardi switches to Triple Missile. Lane remains confident of a forward showing.
“I’m happy with her. She’ll be thereabouts on Saturday,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Lane also saddles up Six Shooter in race six and is hopeful of another strong performance following a last-start win at Pinjarra.
