Joe Pride enjoyed a standout Saturday across three states, his team returning two wins, three seconds and a third, highlighted by a stable quinella in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap at Randwick.
Weeping Woman ($2.60 fav) outfinished stablemate Coal Crusher ($6) in the Sydney sprint, coming just over half an hour after Estadio Mestalla ($9.50) chased home Yorkshire ($3.90 fav) for second in the $2 million The Ingham (1600m).
Earlier, The Black Cloud ($3.30 fav) delivered at Eagle Farm in the Listed Bribie Handicap (1000m), while Private Eye ($2.20 fav) almost sealed a remarkable feature-race treble for the yard before being grabbed right on the line in The Supernova (1400m) at Pakenham.
The stable’s day wrapped up with Tennessir ($7.50) finishing third at Newcastle.
With Pride in Victoria overseeing Private Eye and his son Brave missing the trip due to an ankle injury, Orla Pearl represented the yard at Randwick and said Weeping Woman’s maiden stakes win meant a great deal.
“It was just so good to see her put it all together and really stepping up this preparation,” Pearl said.
Earlier on the Randwick card, Future History ($5) made his Sydney breakthrough when lifting late to capture the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m), holding off Asterix ($7) by a long head.
The eight-year-old ended a 13-month stretch without a win, jockey Adam Hyeronimus crediting the victory to controlling the race from the front.
“He’s a bit quirky and takes a bit of riding, but we controlled the race and that’s what won the race for us,” Hyeronimus said.
Future History previously won the 2023 The Bart Cummings (2520m) and contested that year’s Melbourne Cup (3200m), but hadn’t scored since a Group win at Moonee Valley last October.
“He has done such a good job. He ran in a Melbourne Cup a couple of years ago and it’s great for a good group of owners,” Maher assistant Johann Gerard-Dubord said.
“They had to be patient to get another win, but it was worth it.”
