Just six days after his controversial Sunshine Coast Cup win, Timeless Prince will line up in an open handicap at Doomben.
Trained on the NSW Central Coast by Tony Newing, Timeless Prince won Sunday’s Listed Sunshine Coast Cup (1400m) on a protest lodged by stewards.
First past the line Pillar of Creation had moved out and brushed the tiring Sambucca Shot who in turn brushed Timeless Prince.
“Initially our jockey Paul Hammersley and I had a look at the head-on film and didn’t think there was enough evidence to even lodge a protest,” Newing said.
“But when a steward lodged the objection we went into the inquiry and saw the rear view footage. It told a different story and we could see that there was definite interference.”
Newing has no qualms about backing Timeless Prince up in Saturday’s Sprite Hcp (1350m) after his Sunshine Coast victory which took his record to 11 wins and 15 placings from 49 starts.
Timeless Prince’s $462,000 prize money has been a great return on the $8000 the Casino Prince gelding cost at a Patinack Stud dispersal sale.
“Owner Steve Clarke and I went to the sale looking for a tried horse but we couldn’t get near them, the prices they were going for,” Newing said.
“So I said to Steve we should look at the unraced young horses and we got Timeless Prince.”
Timeless Prince has campaigned in three states and has been backed up quickly in the past.
“We took him to Melbourne in the spring and he wasn’t disgraced. He ran a nice race at Flemington on Emirates day and then we struck a very slowly run race when he was unsuited at Sandown,” Newing said.
Timeless Prince is adept on all surfaces so Newing has no concerns about a possible soft track.
“The main thing was to get a good alley so we can ride him midfield,” he said.
“We got barrier one and he is a very good back-up horse and I have no worries racing him again in six days.”
Hammersley will again ride Timeless Prince who has 56kg.
“Timeless Prince doesn’t look badly off at the weights and I would expect him to run well again,” Newing said.
