The Goodwood Tips, Race Preview and Selections – 21/5/2022

The 2022 Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival draws to a close this Saturday, but not before the annual running of the The Goodwood.

This year’s $500,000 sprint race has attracted a capacity field made up of Behemoth, In The Boat, The Astrologist, and last-start Caulfield winner, Extreme Warrior.

As always, we’ve run the rule over every runner offer our thoughts in our 2022 The Goodwood Preview.

1. Behemoth (8)

  • Record: 13-2:2:2
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 1:0-1-0
  • Trainer: James Cummings
  • Jockey: Damien Oliver
  • Odds: $2.70

Ran on okay for sixth in the DC McKay Stakes two weeks ago off a freshen-up. Failed to finish off the start prior in the CF Orr Stakes after racing wide but does warrant plenty of respect given his record here at Morphettville. Should appreciate getting back on top of the ground now, while out to 1200m is also a big plus.

Bet Now: Behemoth

2. Savatoxl (7)

  • Record: 9-1:1:3
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 1:0-0-1
  • Trainer: Archie Alexander
  • Jockey: Declan Bates
  • Odds: $31.00

Won this race last year at identical odds and comes in off a similar lead-up. Second to Free of Debt in the DC McKay two weeks ago, but hasn’t looked up to this level since winning last year. Lots to like about his record over this trip but needs to improve to be a serious factor.

Bet Now: Savatoxl

3. September Run

4. The Inferno (3)

  • Record: 8-1:2:2
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 1:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young
  • Jockey: Daniel Moor
  • Odds: $19.00

Returned fresh to run third behind Free Of Debt in the DC McKay. Was beaten a nose by Wild Ruler in the Moir Stakes last year and had genuine excuses first-up in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington. Has missed the money only twice over this trip and maps to get back and run on under Mark Zahra. Genuine winning chance.

Bet Now: The Inferno

5. Beau Rossa (21)

  • Record: 11-4:3:0
  • Track: 6:2-3-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Dan Clarken & Oopy MacGillivray
  • Jockey: Ryan Hurdle
  • Odds: $7.50

Second-last in this race last year and has managed only one win since. Was last to greet the judge in the DC McKay Stakes a fortnight ago and is likely to find this much tougher.

Bet Now: Beau Rossa

6. In The Boat (20)

  • Record: 3-3:0:0
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
  • Jockey: John Allen
  • Odds: $4.50

Steps out in search of his hat-trick after winning a Stakes race at The Valley and The Discovery at Sale over the last two months. Kept fresh for the run with four weeks between and tends to race well off a break. Needs a touch of luck from the draw but recent form, and an unblemished record over this trip, reads extremely well.

Bet Now: In The Boat

7. Instant Celebrity (17)

  • Record: 10-3:1:1
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Patrick Payne
  • Jockey: Billy Egan
  • Odds: $26.00

Fitter for two runs back and worth forgiving on her recent run in the Robert Sangster Stakes from the wide gate. Performance the start prior was sound against weaker company and she has won at this stage of her prep in the past. Another wide draw is the main knock, but a place isn’t out of the question if she can save her best for late.

Bet Now: Instant Celebrity

8. The Astrologist (6)

  • Record: 9-3:2:0
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr
  • Jockey: Jason Holder
  • Odds: $26.00

Untried at Morphettville but does have some form around recent winners. Finished just over two lengths behind September Run in the William Reid at The Valley and was beaten only narrowly in the Vobis Gold Sprint at Caulfield last time out. Comes in fresh with three weeks between runs and has typically proven tough to beat off a break. Has placed in two of his three starts under Fred Kersley but a win also wouldn’t surprise.

Bet Now: The Astrologist

9. Halvorsen (2)

  • Record: 10-3:0:2
  • Track: 2:0-0-1
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Lloyd Kennewell
  • Jockey: Beau Mertens
  • Odds: $34.00

Won the Standish Handicap at Flemington over this trip in January and has mixed his form ever since. Runner-up to September Run in the William Reid two back and overcame a blown start to run fifth in The Discovery. Another one that tends to race well fresh and he should be given every chance from the low draw.

Bet Now: Halvorsen

10. Free Of Debt (4)

  • Record: 6-3:1:0
  • Track: 2:0-1-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Tony & Calvin McEvoy
  • Jockey: Barend Vorster
  • Odds: $41.00

Bolted in late to win the DC McKay first-up carrying only 54kg’s. Placed in the Blue Diamond back in 2019 but hasn’t raced at this level in some time. Facing a much stiffer challenge here and is likely to struggle.

Bet Now: Free Of Debt

11. Regardsmaree (1)

  • Record: 11-2:3:0
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Cliff Brown
  • Jockey: Ben Allen
  • Odds: $16.00

Won the Vobis Gold Sprint at Caulfield two back and then made it a double by taking out the Anniversary Vase at Sandown two weeks ago. Plenty fit now for four runs back but has only made one start at Group 1 level in the past. Could sneak into the top five with the rails run.

Bet Now: Regardsmaree

12. Ironclad (16)

  • Record: 8-2:1:2
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Roslyn Day
  • Jockey: Callan Murray
  • Odds: $61.00

Won first-up over the track and distance, albeit it against weaker company. Failed to overcome a slow start in the DC McKay but does hold a winning third-up record. Has won four from five here at Morphettville but this reads much tougher.

Bet Now: Ironclad

13. Lombardo (19)

  • Record: 6-2:0:0
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Gemma Rielly
  • Jockey: Joe Bowditch
  • Odds: $31.00

Resumes from a let-up after finishing a nose second to Regardsmaree at Caulfield. Won a Stakes race here at Morphettville two runs prior and typically gives an honest effort. Fifth to Joner in last year’s Manikato and just needs a pinch of luck to go his way out wide.

Bet Now: Lombardo

14. Outlaws Revenge (9)

  • Record: 12-2:0:2
  • Track: 0:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Shay Keating
  • Jockey: Jake Noonan
  • Odds: $91.00

Finished down the track first-up in a Group 3 and was no match in the DC McKay last time out. Cannot entertain.

Bet Now: Outlaws Revenge

15. Bella Nipotina (15)

  • Record: 8-1:0:3
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Ben & JD Hayes
  • Jockey: Luke Nolen
  • Odds: $41.00

Honest type that ran well when beaten three lengths in the Robert Sangster Stakes. Her win the start prior in the Sapphire Stakes at Randwick was impressive given the conditions. Well-deserving of a Group 1 win at some point but her record at Morphettville and the wide gate do stand out.

Bet Now: Bella Nipotina

16. Aysar (12)

  • Record: 6-1:2:1
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Brock Lewthwaite
  • Jockey: Ms Kayla Crowther
  • Odds: $61.00

Has held his own at this level in the past, most notably running second in the Caulfield Guineas in 2020 and fourth in the Sir Rupert Clarke last year. First-up run was good over shorter and he should improve off that. Tends to race well second-up and is likely going to be tough to catch on-speed.

Bet Now: Aysar

17. Not An Option (5)

  • Record: 6-1:2:1
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Brock Lewthwaite
  • Jockey: Ms Kayla Crowther
  • Odds: $61.00

Won well first-up at Mornington and was far from disgraced behind Extreme Warrior in the Bel Esprit at Caulfield. Facing a tougher assignment here, but he has found the money in both runs third-up. Worth a look in exotics.

Bet Now: Not An Option

18. Frankie Pinot (10)

  • Record: 6-1:2:1
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Brock Lewthwaite
  • Jockey: Ms Kayla Crowther
  • Odds: $61.00

Another one in search of his hat-trick. Returned to win the Wangoom at Warrnambool two weeks ago with a bursting run from well-back. Up to Group 1 level for the first time and he’d appreciate any rain about.

Bet Now: Frankie Pinot

19. Extreme Warrior (13)

  • Record: 6-1:2:1
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Brock Lewthwaite
  • Jockey: Ms Kayla Crowther
  • Odds: $61.00

Impressive type that has hardly put a foot wrong in seven starts. Failed to fire in the Coolmore during the spring but bounced back nicely first-up with a win in the Bel Esprit at Caulfield. Won his maiden by over fourth lengths at this stage of his prep last year and should appreciate 1200m now. Rates highly.

Bet Now: Extreme Warrior

20. General Beau (14)

  • Record: 6-1:2:1
  • Track: 1:0-0-0
  • Distance: 0:0-0-0
  • Trainer: Brock Lewthwaite
  • Jockey: Ms Kayla Crowther
  • Odds: $61.00

Recent form reads well for this. Was the beaten favourite in the Group 2 Tobin Stakes two weeks ago where he came off second-best to a smart filly. Was strong late for third in the William Reid Stakes two starts prior and he should appreciate firmer footing. Better chance than the odds suggest.

Bet Now: General Beau
