News:

The Bryan and Dan Guy training partnership has unearthed a late winter carnival hopeful away from the glare of the Queensland Oaks meeting.

The Guys had one runner on Saturday at Doomben, Silky Brown, who was a good fourth in the Listed Phoenix but they headed straight back to the Gold Coast to saddle Queen of Wands in a Plate race.

The mare pushed her prize money past $200,000 with her win over 1400 metres.

Formerly trained by Clarry Conners in Sydney, Queen Of Wands raced in Queensland last winter when she was second in the Listed Princess Stakes before finishing well down the track in The Roses and Queensland Oaks.

Queen Of Wands, who was also second in the Group Three Belle of the Turf at Gosford, was switched to Guy after an unsuccessful stint in Victoria.

Bryan Guy has been impressed by the mare who he thinks can make her mark in the winter.

“She has done really well up here,” Guys said.

“It looked a perfect race for her at the Gold Coast because she has run in some very good Group races and acquitted herself well.

“It wasn’t a bad field on Saturday but things get tougher from here. At this stage she will run in the Gai Waterhouse Stakes at Ipswich on Cup day (June 17).”

“Where we go with her is up to the way she races in the Waterhouse.”
