Little-known stallion Tamasa, who served just four mares during his brief stint at stud, could soon become a Stakes-producing sire when his promising daughter Cicala lines up in Saturday’s Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville.
Trained by Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea, Cicala has impressed with an unbeaten start to her career, highlighted by a dominant win over subsequent city victor Noetzie at her most recent outing.
The stable’s Racing Manager, Lachie Weekley, revealed that the filly was secured from former trainer Jackson Matthews following a series of eye-catching trials.
Cicala is one of just three foals by Tamasa, a son of So You Think who won five races and was Group 3 placed in Perth when prepared by Darren Weir and Lindsey Smith. Of Tamasa’s progeny, only one other has raced—a six-start maiden in Victoria.
“She’s a fascinating filly with an unusual pedigree but has always shown plenty of natural talent, and she’s thrived since her last victory,” Weekley said.
“Her sire Tamasa had immense ability when trained by Darren Weir. Jackson was winding down his training operation and suggested we take a look at her. After watching her trials, we decided to buy her, and we’re glad Jackson stayed in the ownership because she’s already given us a lot of enjoyment.”
Leading Adelaide apprentice Rochelle Milnes, who is set to be crowned the state’s premiership-winning jockey on Saturday, will take the ride on Cicala.
Weekley said he is confident the filly will handle the expected heavy track conditions, with forecasts of up to 50mm of rain in Adelaide across Friday and Saturday.
Victorian visitor Fieldelo has been installed favourite for the Lightning Stakes, while Cicala has been rated the top local hope at $6.
“We’re excited about Saturday. The wet ground won’t worry her, and the wide draw should play to her advantage later in the day,” Weekley said. “She’s a really talented filly with plenty of upside.”
