Horse Racing News: Quinton sweet on Tortoni at Randwick races

A racing association that has endured for generations will continue this weekend as trainer Ron Quinton prepares promising galloper Signor Tortoni for Randwick.

The three-year-old is owned by Sandy Tait and his sister Jill Nivison, whose families have been deeply involved in Australian racing and breeding for more than 50 years.

The Tait and Nivison families have celebrated top-level success with champions such as Tie The Knot and brilliant mare Spinning Hill, both of whom carried their iconic red silks with a white cap.

Quinton has been a constant presence throughout their journey, initially as a jockey and later as a trusted trainer.

“I rode for Sandy and Kathy Tait, and also for Sandy’s parents, Griff and Daisy,” Quinton said. “Ever since I started training, they’ve always had a horse with me.”

“We’ve trained a few winners together over the years, including some fillies and a horse named Smart As Smart who was later sold to Queensland, but nothing really special until now.”

Signor Tortoni, bred from a family dear to his owners, is Quinton’s latest hopeful. His dam Tortoni has produced Group 1 placegetter Cherry Tortoni and stakes winner Wings Of Song. Tortoni herself is the last foal of renowned producer Whisked, making her a half-sister to Tie The Knot.

“He’s exceptionally well bred, and I’m also set to train a half-sister to him by St Mark’s Basilica,” Quinton revealed.

By Too Darn Hot, Signor Tortoni has impressed early in his career, finishing out of the placings just once in six starts and currently boasting two consecutive wins.

He steps up to Saturday metropolitan grade for the first time in The Agency Real Estate Handicap (1300m), and Quinton is eager to see how he measures up.

“He’s been very consistent. Two wins, three seconds and a fourth from six starts is a nice record,” Quinton said. “He’s always shown good ability. Now it’s a matter of taking the next step.”

Quinton will also saddle Rantan in the day’s final race. Despite her tough barrier draw of 13 and some bad luck in recent starts, he remains confident in her talent.

“She showed great potential early on, but a few little issues have held her back,” he said. “If she finally gets a bit of luck, she’s good enough to be right in the finish.”

Early markets have seen Rantan backed from $26 into $9.50, while Signor Tortoni is at $5.50 for his assignment.
