The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is a Group 1 race held each year under open handicap conditions. This highly anticipated event is one of the first Group 1 events of the Melbourne Spring, hosted at Caulfield during September. The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes has been run since 1951, with many of the nations’ finest horses taking out this event since then.

Originally run as a Principal event over a distance of seven furlongs in 1951, the inaugural Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes was won by Jovial Lad. In 1972 this event converted to 1400 metres, a distance that has remained ever since. A few years later in 1979 the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes was elevated to a Group 1 race, and it has retained this status to this day.
Like many thoroughbred races in Australia, the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes has changed its name on multiple occasions, running as the Invitation Stakes until 1974 and also known as the Marlboro Cup, Victoria Health Cup, and the Eat Well Live Well Cup. However, it has been run under its registered title in modern times, with some of the best horses in the country battling it out for $400,000 in prize money.
The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes has been won by some notable names over its history, including Exceed & Excel in 2003, Testa Rossa in 1999 and 2000, Encosta De Lago in 1996, Our Maizcay in 1995, and Poetic King in 1994. In recent years, winners of this event include Orange County in 2008, Turffontein in 2009, Response in 2010, Toorak Toff in 2011, and Moment Of Change in 2012.
