Plans for promising filly Sequista to head north for the Brisbane winter carnival have hit a snag following an unfortunate float mishap, but co-trainer Gerald Ryan is optimistic that she can still make her way to Queensland in the coming weeks.
Sequista was among the top picks for a two-year-old race at Gosford’s stand-alone Saturday meeting earlier this month but was a late scratching after sustaining minor injuries while unloading from the float.
“She didn’t do anything wrong, but as she was walking off, her leg went over the side of the tailboard and she ended up with a few small cuts on her cannon bone,” Ryan explained.
While the injuries were not serious, they were enough to sideline her from that planned start and alter her campaign trajectory. The team had initially earmarked this weekend’s Listed Bill Carter Stakes (1350m) at Doomben for her Queensland debut.
Instead, Sequista has been entered for the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Handicap (1200m) at Randwick, though her participation will hinge on race-day track conditions.
“She hasn’t missed any work, but it did force us to revise her schedule,” Ryan said. “She’s thriving at home and is in good order, but we’ll see what the track is like. A heavy 10 surface isn’t ideal when she’s going five or six weeks between runs.”
Sequista has been allotted 56kg with Braith Nock’s 2kg claim and will contest the opening race on Saturday’s card, giving her first crack at the surface if she does start.
Despite the detour, a trip north is still very much on the table. The Oxlade Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap day remains a logical target should she come through Saturday well.
