TJ Smith Stakes runner-up Fell Swoop is set to trial at Warwick Farm as he tunes up for the Melbourne spring carnival’s rich sprint races.
Canberra trainer Matt Dale said Fell Swoop would have the first of two trials on Friday ahead of the Group Two Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield on October 8.
“He’ll have another trial two weeks later and then resume in the Schillaci,” Dale said.
Dale said the Group One Manikato Stakes on Cox Plate eve was an option, along with the Group Two Linlithgow Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day, October 29.
“Depending on how he comes through the Schillaci will determine whether we look towards the Manikato or if he needs a little bit more time after that run,” Dale said.
The Linlithgow would be Fell Swoop’s first attempt down the Flemington straight.
“We’re very mindful of only giving him a light spring,” Dale said.
Only Chautauqua could deny Fell Swoop victory in the $2.5 million TJ Smith at Randwick in April.
Fell Swoop was also runner-up in the Oakleigh Plate behind Flamberge and a Group Two winner during the Brisbane winter carnival.
