Schillaci Stakes 2012 tips, preview and selections

Feature sprinting race of the day is the G2 Schillaci Stakes over the flying 1000m. Last year the race was won by mighty mare Black Caviar and whilst she will not be competing in this year’s race, a smart field of sprinters line up for the $221,000.00 purse on offer.

1. BUFFERING

A fantastic galloper who hasn’t missed a place in his last eight starts – six of which were at G1 level. He returned to racing with a very smart victory in the G2 AJ Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley on the 28th August where, despite being slowly away, was able to rally through the inside to lead and defy the challengers late. It is impossible to leave him out on that win and his overall record and has already been met with good support – $3.30 – $2.80

Odds: $2.50

2. TEMPLE OF BOOM

Qld galloper that hasn’t raced since running fifth (beaten 3) behind Mid Summer Music in the G1 Stradbroke Handicap in June. First up last prep ran sixth in the G1 Lightning Stakes and claimed the G1 Galaxy three starts later. He’ll be getting a long way back but can rattle home.

Odds: $9.00

3. FIRST COMMAND

A 7yo who tackles this race first up and generally produces a good run fresh (won three from seven first up) and saves his best for this circuit (5 wins) He has been prepared for his return with a good hit out at in a Cranbourne Trial where he was piloted by his Jockey today, Steve Arnold who has two wins and placing from four starts aboard.

Odds: $13.00

4. PAMPELONNE

A lightly raced by promising four year old from Tim Martin’s Rosehill stables. Strung three together leading into his sixth placing (beaten 3.8) in the G1 Doomben 10,000 before returning with a good win in the G2 The Shorts at Randwick three weeks ago beating Satin Shoes who placed second in the Premiere Stakes last weekend. First look at Caufield.

Odds: $6.50

5. GOLDEN ARCHER

From his wide draw last start in the McEwan stakes, he had to do a bit of work and chased Bel Sprinter valiantly finishing fourth of nine (beaten 1 length). This was off the back of a solid win in the Listed The Shark (1100m). Poor draw here doesn’t help his chances.

Odds: $7.00

6. STIRLING GROVE

An Adelaide visitor who hasn’t raced since running second behind Kulgrinda in the Listed Manihi Classis at Morphetville in May. He ran third in this race last year behind Black Caviar (beaten 4.7) second up and whilst generally around the money, doesn’t win out of turn.

Odds: $19.00

7. SNITZEM

Very speedy type who, after running an good third behind Bel Sprinter first up in the G3 McEwan Stakes (beaten ¾), was too toey over the 955m at Moonee Valley on the 28th Sept. She’s drawn six here but should still have enough gate speed to cross those drawn inside her.

Odds: $13.00

8. DIDNTCOSTALOT

Won a Restricted 82 event at Sandown first up by two lengths on a Heavy track and his trainer Marc Conners, immediately entered him in the G3 McEwan Stakes where he had no luck at all securing a run in the straight, finishing 2 ¼ lengths behind Bel Sprinter. Should’ve at least placed last start and gets his chance to make amends here. He has won eight of from fourteen overall, four from six at the trip and three from six at this course – he’d have to be included.

Odds: $21.00

9. LONE ROCK

Smart mare who was the winner of the G1 The Goodwood and G3 Bobbie Lewis last year. She hasn’t raced since finishing fourth behind Black Caviar in the G1 Robert Sangster back in April of this year. Has had two trials, not asked to do much in either. Wait for later.

Odds: $8.00

10. MALASUN

Three year old filly taking on the older horses here so she gets in with the lightweight of 51kgs. Returned to racing three weeks back and led the field in a 3yo Open race before being overhauled late by Love For Ransom and Stella Lante.

Odds: $41.00

OVERVIEW

The weight conditions of this race play into the hands of Buffering who should be able to tail Snitzem across at the start and sit second. As he showed last start, he is a very hard horse to ran past. Temple of Boom should get a lovely run behind a good speed and given his chance in the straight, will be finishing hard. He has an impressive record of five wins from nine starts this trip and any rain wouldn’t harm his chances. Pampelonne next best.
