Randwick Guineas Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

Sydney’s champion trainer Chris Waller is looking for back to back wins in Saturday’s Group 1 $1m Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Randwick after his top flight three year The Autumn Sun collected the winning trophy for the stable last year.

Waller will saddle up Reloaded, Kubrick and Pancho but the that trio will be facing some strong opposition from Group 1 winners Castelvecchio, Super Seth, Microphone, Warning, Prince Fawaz and Shadow Hero.

The Randwick Guineas for the three year olds has attracted a field of fourteen with the Anthony Freedman trained Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth drawing the rails while James Cummings’ Microphone will jump from the outside gate.

We have analysed the entire field and our complete 2020 Randwick Guineas tips can be found below!

Castelvecchio

Castelvecchio is one of two runners to have won over the same course and distance as the Randwick Guineas and the Richard Litt trained colt will appreciate the step up to the 1600m following his first up sixth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes over 1400m at Rosehill on February 22. Will get back from barrier twelve and will be doing his best work over the final 250m.

Super Seth

Super Seth was a last stride winner in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield during the 2019 Melbourne Spring Carnival and will be suited by the 1600m of the Randwick Guineas. Super Seth has returned in the Autumn in fine form with a first up win in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) followed by a second against the older horses at weight for age in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 22. The Dundeel colt will get the run of the race from the inside gate and is one of the main chances.

Microphone

Trainer James Cummings saddled up the winner of the 2018 Randwick Guineas when Kementari took out the major prize and Microphone has a great chance to give the Godolphin trainer another Randwick Guineas winning trophy. Microphone is a two times winner at Randwick which includes his victory in the 2019 Group 1 Inglis Sires (1400m). The Exceed And Excel colt returned to the winner’s stall with a second up win in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 8 and heads to the Randwick Guineas on the back of a third in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

Warning

2019 Victoria Derby winner Warning will be better suited when he gets up to a longer journey later on in his campaign and was never a threat when resuming for the Autumn with a first up seventh in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

Shadow Hero

Shadow Hero was one of the star three year olds during the 2019 Sydney Spring Carnival with wins in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes over 1800m at Rosehill and in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick. The Mark Newnham trained gelding made up some ground from the back with a first up fifth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill and will be running on again at the end of the 1600m. He has a perfect two from two second up record and can’t be underestimated.

Brandenburg

The John Sargent trained Brandenburg put himself into Randwick Guineas contention with an upset win at $41 in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill and a repeat performance could see him figure in the finish again.

Prince Fawaz

Prince Fawaz claimed Group 1 glory at the end of his two year old season with a win in the J J Atkins Plate over 1600m at Eagle Farm during the 2019 Brisbane Winter Carnival. The Anthony Cummings trained colt has failed to run a place at his next three starts and finished at the tail of the field in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

Reloaded

Reloaded is the first of the Chris Waller trained trio in the field and put himself in to Randwick Guineas contention with a solid second in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill. James McDonald takes the ride again and the Snitzel colt will appreciate the soft track conditions.

Kubrick

Kubrick failed to impress with a first up eighth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes but was a winner over the same course and distance as the Randwick Guineas with his victory in the $1m Bondi Stakes at the end of the 2019 Sydney Spring Carnival.  Has to improve dramatically on his first up effort to be a threat.

Pancho

Pancho finished second to his Chris Waller trained stablemate Kubrick in the $1m Bondi Stakes (1600m) at Randwick during the 2019 Sydney Spring Carnival. The Dissident gelding was always about the same when a first up fourth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and has a two from two second up winning record.

Conqueror

The Lindsay Park trained Conqueror is still eligible for restricted grade although he did run second to Group 1 Surround Stakes winner Probabeel in the NZ$1m Karaka Million 3yo Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie in New Zealand on January 25.

The Holy One

The Holy One was the winner of the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at The Valley during the 2019 Melbourne Spring Carnival but has been well beaten at his two runs back this campaign, his latest a tenth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill. This is harder.

Fortress Command

Fortress Command will be one of the outsiders of the field after a first ninth in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill.

Sirmaze

Sirmaze is the winner of one of his eight starts and looks out of his depth here on his latest second in Canberra Guineas Preview (1400m) at Canberra on February 21.
