News:

Christian Reith has snared the plum ride on unbeaten three-year-old Bitburg in the Inglis Sprint at Randwick, replacing the injured Jay Ford.

One of five jockeys hurt in a multiple-horse fall in Friday’s Mudgee Cup, Ford will find out this week if he needs surgery on his broken left hand.

Ford has a perfect record on the Matt Dale-trained gelding, riding him to his four wins.

“Obviously it’s unfortunate because Jay has been part of Bitburg and is four from four on him,” Dale said.

“Christian has the ride on Saturday in what will be a test for Bitburg.

“It is a step up in grade but at the same time he is back to three-year-old company.

“He should be well placed to be competitive and we will assess off the back of Saturday where he goes next.

“Fell Swoop is the best horse in my stable. He’s gone to another level. Bitburg isn’t in the same grade yet but any horse that can win four from four definitely excites you.”

Bitburg was one of 18 entries taken on Monday for the $250,000 race over 1100 metres restricted to Inglis sale graduates.

The gelding by Time Thief out of Koblenz cost just $2,500 at last year’s Scone sale.

He won his first three starts at Canberra and Goulburn in the winter by a combined eight lengths.

His first trip to Sydney yielded victory over 1100m at Rosehill on November 21 in a Highway Handicap restricted to country-trained horses.

Dale has won three Highway Handicaps but doesn’t have a runner among the 19 nominations in Saturday’s race at Randwick over 1400m.

“I’ve run out of ammunition,” he said.

The entries are headed by the Robert Price-trained Dashie De Luxe who won on a heavy track at Rosehill on November 14 before finishing out of the money two weeks later behind the Dale-trained Royal Jackpot.
