Immediacy set for the Chairman’s Handicap 2025

Connections of Immediacy have opted for a more measured path this winter, bypassing the Group 1 arena in favour of a more winnable target.

Despite recent form suggesting he could measure up, the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained gelding will tackle the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at Doomben this Saturday rather than next week’s Group 1 challenge.

Immediacy has been in strong touch, stringing together back-to-back wins, but his trainers are keeping things in perspective ahead of the Doomben Cup.

“The reality is he’s probably not a Group 1 horse – he’s a Group 3, fringe-Group 2 horse – so you’ve got to put them in the right races,” Busuttin said.

“We’re just trying to win some races and pick up some prizemoney away from the better horses.”

Immediacy has barrier two in the field of 14 and will be guided by top jockey Mark Zahra, carrying 58kg. The race also features Sir Delius, a Frankel gelding trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, who heads the weights with 60kg.

A win this weekend could see Immediacy elevated toward a possible start in the $1.2 million Q22 (2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 14.
