Queensland Derby 2025 hopes on show at Flemington

A possible Queensland Derby berth is on the line for promising three-year-old Politely Dun, who returns to racing this Saturday at Flemington.

Originally aimed at the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) on May 3, Politely Dun was scratched from that target due to an unsatisfactory blood profile. Now, trainer Danny O’Brien has turned his attention to the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on May 31, with a strong showing in the Sir Henry Bolte Handicap (2000m) this weekend to determine his path.

“Clinically he’s been fine, and his blood picture came back quickly to normal parameters, so he’ll run on Saturday and provided he runs well there he will go two weeks into the Queensland Derby,” O’Brien said.

Politely Dun last raced on April 5 at Caulfield, where he closed strongly to finish second behind Statuario, who has since placed in the South Australian Derby. He was also nominated for the VRC St Leger (2800m) but skipped the race to focus on South Australia before illness intervened.

He’ll now line up from barrier nine under jockey Jordan Childs in a full field at Flemington.
