Newmarket Handicap Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

The Newmarket Handicap is always one of the highlights of the Autumn Racing Carnival and the 2020 edition is set to be no exception.

The 2020 Newmarket Handicap field is packed full of some of the best sprinters in the country and we are set for a fascinating battle at Flemington on Saturday.

We have analysed every single runner in the race and our complete 2020 Newmarket Handicap tips can be found below.

Gytrash

Gytrash will carry the top-weight of 57 kilograms in the Newmarket Handicap. He has developed into a genuine Group 1 sprinter and he goes into the Newmarket Handicap on the back of a career best performance in the Black Caviar Lightning. You can’t knock his record and he is unbeaten at Flemington, but this is a step-up in quality again. It takes an elite sprinter to win the Newmarket Handicap with the top-weight and I’m not sure that Gytrash is at that level.

Zoutori

Zoutori returned to the races with a second place finish in the Oakleigh Plate and he is a galloper that generally does produce his best form down the famous Flemington straight. There is no reason that he can’t improve on his first-up effort, but I am still not sure that he has as much upside as some of the other sprinters in this field.

Despatch

Despatch was soundly beaten in the Black Caviar Lightning and this contest is tougher again. He is one of the extreme outsiders in Newmarket Handicap betting for a reason.

The Inevitable

The Inevitable could be the x-factor in the Newmarket Handicap field. His wins in the Bendigo Bank Stakes and The Silver Eagle during the Spring Racing Carnival were both outstanding and he has won down the Flemington straight in the past. He is still a lightly-raced galloper and there is no reason that he can’t go to another level again this campaign. The $9 currently available does represent genuine value.

Bivouac

Bivouac is one of three horses locked in a battle for favourtism in Newmarket Handicap betting. The rivalry between him and Exceedance is fascinating. He beat his rival in both the Run To The Rose and the Golden Rose, but Exceedance had his measure in the San Domenico Stakes and the Coolmore Stud Stakes. Bivouac does have a fitness edge over Exceedance and there was plenty to like about his effort in the Oakleigh Plate. It was impossible to win from where he was situated in the early stages of the race and he was still able to make up good ground late against the pattern of the day. He should take good improvement from that performance and that will make him tough to beat.

Exceedance

It takes an excellent horse to win the Newmarket Handicap first-up and Exceedance could be exactly that. He made his Flemington debut in the Coolmore Stud Stakes on Victoria Derby Day and he produced a truly elite performance to upstage Bivouac to claim victory. Bivouac does have a fitness edge over Exceedance, but Exceedance is unbeaten first-up and he did seem to relish the Flemington straight. There is no reason that he can’t win another Group 1.

Halvorsen

Halvorsen has worked his way through the grades nicely and he was never given a chance when he was settled at the tail of the field in the Oakleigh Plate. There is no doubt that he would still need to improve to be a genuine chance in this contest and $20 does seem around the right mark.

Mystyko

Mystyko failed to fire in the Oakleigh Plate and he has never shown anything to suggest that he is capable of winning a race of this quality.

Tofane

Tofane finished at the tail of the field in the Black Caviar Lightning and this contest is tougher again. I don’t think that he is up to this level.

Trope

Trope has always had plenty of ability, but hasn’t really been able to deliver at this level. He was only fair in the Oakleigh Plate and this race is tougher again.

Loving Gaby

Loving Gaby is right in the mix in the Newmarket Handicap. She showed she was capable of beating the older horses when she won the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes during the Spring Racing Carnival and she returned to the races with an excellent Newmarket Handicap trial in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. The I Am Invincible filly should take good improvement from that performance and the step-up to 1200 metres suits. My question is whether she is as good as Exceedance or Bivouac? She hasn’t reached the ratings highs of her rivals and that means I can’t get her as short in Newmarket Handicap betting.

Banquo

This is a big step-up in class for Banquo after he finished a close second behind Microphone in the Autumn Stakes. I like him as a horse, but I’m not sure that he is up to a race of this quality at this stage of his career.

Libertini

Libertini is one of the most interesting runners in the Newmarket Handicap field. She chased home Exceedance and Bivouac in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and there is no doubt that she has Group 1 ability on her day. Her first-up run in the Light Fingers Stakes was a touch flat on paper, but it did appear she didn’t relish the wet track. She still needs to produce a career best performance to win the Newmarket Handicap and $9.50 does seem a fair price.
