Aaron Purcell added another feather to his Warrnambool Carnival cap on Wednesday, with Dashing taking out the Listed Wangoom Handicap in testing conditions.
The local trainer has now won three of the five marquee races at the Carnival, with the Wangoom joining previous victories in the Grand Annual Steeplechase and Galleywood Hurdle.
Only the Warrnambool Cup and the Brierly Steeplechase remain for Purcell to complete the full set, although he will have to wait another year to contest the Cup after not having a runner in Thursday’s feature.
A heavy downpour before the Wangoom turned the track to a true test, and it played perfectly into the hands of Dashing, who gave Irish jockey Tom Madden his first win at the Carnival.
Sent out at $9, Dashing scored by half a length over Fortunate Kiss ($6.50), with Dubai Poet ($18) finishing third a further 1-½ lengths away.
Purcell admitted the Wangoom wasn’t on the radar earlier in the campaign but became the logical option as the horse continued to thrive.
“He’s a bit awkwardly placed with his rating in the 90s,” Purcell told racing.com. “He just kept improving and by the time we got close to the race, we figured why not give it a go.”
“He always runs well, and the rain made it a real test, which suited. Being wide actually helped us today.”
Dashing has now won seven of his 34 starts with 14 minor placings and looks set to stretch out in distance this winter.
“We’ll get him up to a mile now. The Winter Championship at Flemington is definitely something we’re looking at,” Purcell said.
