Golden Slipper runner-up Coleman to debut for new stable

Chris Waller will unleash a trio of talented colts this weekend, with high-profile contenders Coleman and Gatsby’s stepping out, but it may be the untapped Emirate who captures attention.

Coleman, a former Golden Slipper runner-up for Matt Laurie, will make his first start for Waller in the Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday, following his move north after dual acceptances, including for the Hawkesbury Gold Rush (1100m).

Meanwhile, Gatsby’s will look to rebound in the Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m), stepping up in trip and racing without blinkers for the first time in response to feedback from jockey Nash Rawiller.

“Nash gave us a strong push to take the blinkers off and step him up in distance,” assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said. “He’s been relaxing beautifully in trackwork without them.”

Coleman returns from a spring campaign where he placed in the Roman Consul and competed against older horses in Group 1 company. He’ll wear a nose roll for the first time on Saturday.

“Both his trials have been exceptional,” Duckworth said. “He’s been very manageable and we think the gear changes have helped him relax. Hopefully he can show a strong turn of foot.”

Emirate, a colt with significant upside, is also set to resume at Eagle Farm. He won his first two starts before running fifth in both The Run To The Rose and Golden Rose last spring.

A planned tilt at the Coolmore Stud Stakes was scrapped due to bone chips discovered after a jump out, prompting surgery on his fetlocks.

“It probably happened in the Golden Rose,” Duckworth said. “He was one of our top hopes for the Coolmore—James McDonald was choosing between him and Switzerland.”

Emirate will resume in a three-year-old race in Brisbane as the stable takes a cautious approach to his return.
