Late Mail: Manfred Stakes 2014 day – Caulfield racecourse

The Autumn carnival is not too far away and this Saturday at Caulfield, things continue to warm up a touch with the running of several blacktype races, most notably the $135,000 Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m), which sees the clash of Golden Rose placegetter Bull Point and boom colt Prince Harada.

Race One (13:15) : Robert Hunter Handicap (78) 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Looks a nice race to resume in for Scratchy Bottom (Best Odds: $5.00), who created a big impression during the Spring in two runs at the Valley, bolting in on debut before running a game fourth in Group 2 company behind Gypsy Diamond. At the weights, she looks the one to beat. Fitness is the query. If she is anywhere near right, she should just about take care of these.
Big Danger: Mamwaazel (Best Odds: $6.00) looked the winner last time out at Flemington, only to be gunned down in the last couple of strides by Miss Maggiebeel, a filly who looks to have a bit of promise. Senior rider back on board now, should get over from the barrier, and is rock hard fit.
Roughie: Kiss Me Ketut (Best Odds: $7.50) is a very genuine filly who always tries her heart out every time she steps out onto the race track, like she did last start at the Valley in a race dominated by the on pace runners. She was one of only a few to make up ground. At the weights, she doesn’t look that well placed, but she is very genuine and should run another good race.

Race Two (13:50) : Thomas North Handicap (90) 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Our Hand Of Faith (Best Odds: $3.30) for me. Ran a nice race first up at the Valley behind stablemate King Buddy, then got to the best part of the track when racing here a couple of weeks back and recording a dominant win. He generally produces his best after a couple of runs under the belt in a prep, so the fact he has already won suggests he is thriving under the care of Darren Weir.
Big Danger: Sistine Demon (Best Odds: $4.00) has been given a month off after leading all the way over the Flemington mile in a much stronger race than this. She won her previous three runs prior to that Flemington victory, and with residual fitness, and the chance of a soft run either leading or behind the leader, she’ll prove hard to beat again.
Roughie: The two runners to watch here are Desert Jeuney (Best Odds: $10.00), who is an up and coming stayer resuming, and Rawnaq, who hasn’t been seen since the 2012 Zipping Classic.

Race Three (14:25) : Equiano Summer Championship Final 1600m Form Guide

Back Me: Eraset (Best Odds: $3.80) has come back in superb order this time in, running third to The Peak first up, then second to the big danger before backing up a week later and recording an impressive win over 1700m. He seems much more genuine this time in, and despite being away from Flemington, he’ll be very hard to hold out.
Big Danger: Morant (Best Odds: $11.00) is a milk drinker, but he teased again last Friday night at the Valley when finishing off his race quite nicely behind Akzar. On his best form, he is a definite chance here. He has just been impossible to follow since coming from Perth.
Roughie: Road Trippin’ (Best Odds: $6.00) looks the value runner for mine. He wasn’t too bad late when sixth to Eraset at Flemington, making ground late. He gets a 4kg weight pull on that horse now, has the barrier advantage, and on his best form, he’d go very close.

Race Four (15:00) : Chairman’s Stakes 1100m Form Guide

Back Me: Very tough race to sort out. I’ll stick with the favourite Nayeli (Best Odds: $3.20). She took a little to wind up on debut, but once given a couple of cracks with the whip by Tommy, she really lengthened out and showed a brilliant turn of foot. She comes to Melbourne now, and to Caulfield, which has been the downfall of many horses in the past, so that’s the risk you take. But I think she’s above average and can overcome it.
Big Danger: Zululand (Best Odds: $13.00) hasn’t raced since late November when a handy second to Nordic Empire. That horse went on to run okay in the Magic Millions, so the form does read well, and he is sure to have come on from the break. $10 looks overs in my opinion.
Roughie: Cautious (Best Odds: $36.00) looked to travel sweetly outside the speed on debut here, and when asked for the effort, she quickly sprinted to the lead, then seemed to get lost and was run down late. I think with a bunny to chase, and with the race experience under her belt, she can certainly beat these.

Race Five (15:35) : Ian Miller Handicap (90) 1600m Form Guide

Back Me: Crucial (Best Odds: $10.00) did a stack of work at Flemington last time out, sitting wide with no cover yet hit the lead in the straight and looked the winner, only to be gunned down late by Flying Hostess, who is a chance in the Summer Championship Final earlier on in the day. If she can get cover from the barrier here, and be not too far away, she is certainly going to be there when the whips are cracking.
Big Danger: Five All (Best Odds: $4.80) just got too far back in that race won by Flying Hostess. Her last 400m was excellent, but had to make up too much ground and ended up in third. Smaller field suits, as does the claim for Jye McNeil, and is flying at the moment.
Roughie: Text’n Hurley (Best Odds: $5.00) ran a much improved race over the 1400m here last time out when second to Are There Any, who was on the better part of the track. On her best form, she’d blitz these and comfortably. In the mix.

Race Six (16:10) : Manfred Stakes 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: If Bull Point (Best Odds: $3.60) is good enough for Olly, then it’s good enough for me. Showed great promise during the Sydney winter, then ran one of the best races from a beaten horse you’ll see for some time when third in the Golden Rose to Zoustar. Missed the start, sat about four-five lengths off the second last horse, peeled about six wide on the turn and ran on hard to be beaten just under two lengths. Trial was good, as was the jumpout. Hard to beat.
Big Danger: Prince Harada (Best Odds: $3.60) is one of the better colts in Melbourne, who resumes after a fair run in the Caulfield Guineas, where it looked as if he was a tired horse. Seems to race best when fresh, and drawn off the fence is ideal for him, as he prefers clear air with no hassle.
Roughie: The Quarterback (Best Odds: $7.00) is yet to race in town, but is highly regarded by people who know their stuff. He had two runs in the Spring, resulting in a maiden win at Bairnsdale and a victory at Sale. He looks the real deal, but if you like him, his current price of $5.50 is far too short.

Race Seven (16:50) : W.J. Adams Stakes 1000m Form Guide

Back Me: Lord Of The Sky (Best Odds: $1.90) looks the good thing on the program. Looked a touch ordinary in winning first up, then raced here a couple of weeks back and despite running about in the straight, he won by six lengths and ran very smart time. Should lead comfortably, roll along and prove too good for these.
Big Danger: If there is going to be an upset, it’ll come courtesy of African Pulse (Best Odds: $5.50), who is unbeaten in five runs first up. Was last seen in April when fifth to Vatican after covering plenty of ground in the run. Drawn well, should sit not too far away from the top tip, and can sprint hard when right.
Roughie: Nothing wrong with the first up win of General Truce (Best Odds: $26.00) in the Kensington Stakes down the Flemington straight. He is a proven performer at this level and higher, and won’t be too far away from the rails draw. $17 looks to be great overs and is worth a small ticket each way.

Race Eight (17:30) : Mornington Cup Prelude 2000m Form Guide

Back Me: Laidback Larry (Best Odds: $2.20) had always shown some promise, and that was evident in his opening two runs this time in, but after his last start win, he could very well develop into a Caulfield Cup horse. He did a mountain of work in the run, sitting three and four wide before being sent to the front, setting a strong tempo and leading by four lengths, before again kicking clear at the top of the straight and winning most impressively. Sure, he didn’t beat much, but the manner in which it was done suggests to me he is a future Group 1 horse.
Big Danger: He’s Your Man (Best Odds: $4.60) is another who could develop into a big race performer after two excellent runs on Australian soil since coming from Europe. Raced a touch flat last start, but is looking for further, which he gets here.
Roughie: Prince Of Penzance (Best Odds: $5.00) wasn’t given the best of rides by Michelle Payne last start at Flemington, settling a long way back, last on the rails, before getting clear 400m out and storming home late for second to Eraset. If they go hard in front, this bloke will hit the line better than anything, and is a classy animal himself.
