Late Mail: February Handicap 2014 day – Rosehill racecourse

An excellent card of racing has been assembled for Rosehill on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is good and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (12:55) : Australian Turf Club Handicap (74) 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: Woodbine (Best Odds: $1.65) is the one to beat here. Really attacked the line over the final furlong to record an impressive first up win at Randwick a couple of weeks back. Looks destined to win a good race and should pick this one up along the way.
Big Danger: Pirandello (Best Odds: $5.50) is absolutely flying at the moment, but he just keeps bumping into good horses or gets no luck. Got severely checked at Kensington last start when making a move out wide on the home turn, losing all winning hopes. If there is going to be an upset, it’ll come from this bloke.
Roughie: Cosmic Cameo (Best Odds: $7.00) continues to race quite consistently in easier company than this. Looked to have his chance last start when third to Kencella, so I don’t think he’ll beat these, but he looks the best of the rest.

Race Two (13:32) : ATC Membership On Sale Now Handicap 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: Delectation (Best Odds: $2.60) on top for me. Had one start back late last year, resulting in a game second to subsequent Magic Millions winner Unencumbered at Randwick. Freshened up, went to the trials, and looked very sharp in winning. He gives the impression he’ll be better suited over slightly further, but looks to have a touch of quality about him.
Big Danger: Peggy Jean (Best Odds: $3.00) was given a peach steer by McEvoy to win the Inglis Classic at Rosehill last start, sitting wide with cover and letting down at the right time to grab Boomwaa close to home. I think if she pokes around in these sort of races, she’ll win more often than not. Don’t think she is Slipper material. Still, hard to beat here.
Roughie: Unequivocal (Best Odds: $11.00) trialled really nicely prior to her slashing third in the Inglis Classic, sitting well back with cover before winding up strongly late. Drawn the paint here, and with the race experience under her belt, she should run quite well.

Race Three (14:07) : Tab Rewards Handicap (72) 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Forever Loved (Best Odds: $4.40) was asked to do too much work in front after missing the kick first up at Kensington. She hustled forward and eventually got the lead, but that effort told in the straight and she weakened out of contention in the straight. The lead looks to be hers on a platter with a clean getaway, and with a bone dry track expected, it’ll prove difficult to make up ground.
Big Danger: All Cerise (Best Odds: $2.35) came back to racing in superb order at Canterbury a few weeks ago, sitting just off the speed before powering clear in the straight to record a most impressive victory. Looks very promising and is a deserved favourite.
Roughie: Sense And Reason (Best Odds: $6.00) landed a decent plunge two back at Kensington, then raced there again a couple of weeks back and worked home nicely a real smart type in Shamalia. Drawn the rails, Cassidy on board, hard to beat.

Race Four (14:42) : Hyland Race Colours Handicap (77) 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Rare that you see Peter Snowden horses on the seven day back up, but that is the case with Seaside (Best Odds: $3.30), who was a touch unlucky last week at Randwick when working home strongly from the back in a race dominated by the leader, Champagne Cath. Up to 1400m suits and draws perfectly.
Big Danger: More Than Brave (Best Odds: $4.00) put up a remarkable performance to get the job done at Canterbury a couple of weeks back. She missed the start and settled last on the fence. 600m to go she was still there with nowhere to go. On the home turn, McDonald got her away from the rail and shoved her into the clear, then she let down powerfully and ended up winning quite softly on the line. Nice mare heading in the right direction and she can certainly handle the step up to Saturday grade.
Roughie: Agon (Best Odds: $9.00) is a handy mare for Chris Waller who can be very frustrating to follow, but was rewarded for consistency with a narrow win at Canterbury. Drawn well and the small field suits.

Race Five (15:17) : Tab.com.au Handicap (85) 1100m Form Guide

Back Me: Jim Cassidy on an in form leader means one thing…get on. Kencella (Best Odds: $3.20) has been freshened since setting a fast tempo and keeping on keeping on at this track/distance earlier in the month. Gets much needed weight relief, should lead these comfortably, and prove very hard to run down.
Big Danger: Agent (Best Odds: $5.50) had no luck at all first up a couple of weeks behind Party Dress. He got shuffled back near the fence and never really got a clear crack at them in the straight to end up finishing eighth, beaten just under two lengths. The wide barrier should ensure he gets a clear run, and a hot tempo will ensure he gets his chance to run on. Definite threat.
Roughie: Tahitian Black (Best Odds: $8.50) worked to the line gamely when third to Knoydart and Howmuchdoyouloveme in the Canterbury Classic last Friday night. He is bursting to win another race, but just keeps bumping into one or two better on the day. Barrier one, big drop in class, hard to beat.

Race Six (15:52) : February Handicap 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: A bit of Olly magic got Velrosso (Best Odds: $4.00) home in the Magic Millions Cup at the Gold Coast, where he weaved his way through the field and was lifted to the line by the champion hoop when challenged over the final 100m. Cassidy is on now, and he rides the horse better than anyone. He is flying himself…but he is bumping into a high class animal.
Big Danger: Had the bob of the head gone his way, Limes (Best Odds: $4.40) would be a dual stakes winner at his last two starts. Looked the winner at first glance in the Manifold, only for the photo to go against him, then was nailed right on the line by Finishing Card last week in the John Dillon. Another who is flying, and should race well again.
Roughie: Lunayir (Best Odds: $51.00) seems crazy odds for mine. Wasn’t too bad early on last prep, then lost his way towards the end. Has trialled nicely a couple of times leading up to this, and could surprise.

Race Seven (16:30) : Schweppes Handicap (88) 2000m Form Guide

Back Me: This is probably D-Day for Queen’s Elect (Best Odds: $9.00) and this preparation. Has had five runs to bring up to fitness for this, and battled away quite gamely in a race which wasn’t run to suit last week when fourth to Monton. Up to 2000m, gets the pull in the weights, should roll forward…she gets her chance.
Big Danger: Junoob (Best Odds: $2.80) was a real eye catcher last week over 1800m when a fast finishing second to Divertire. This is his pet distance, Nash goes on, drawn well, drops in weight…looks the one to beat.
Roughie: Madam Nash (Best Odds: $8.00) hasn’t been seen since finishing down the track in the Belle Of The Turf at Gosford behind Myamira. She hadn’t looked the part this time in, but a very good trial performance last week suggests that she could be back on track. Don’t leave her out of calculations.

Race Eight (17:10) : Rosehill Gardens Handicap (78) 1500m Form Guide

Back Me: One last chance for Specific Choice (Best Odds: $3.70). Loomed to win, and was going to go straight past Almighty Charge at Randwick, but didn’t go on with it after seemingly looking to be bolting in the run. Second run back since being gelded, drawn well, Bowman sticks…last chance, otherwise he’ll join the Milk Drinking Association.
Big Danger: Longeron (Best Odds: $3.80) isn’t too far away from joining that association either. Granted, he was a touch unlucky behind Jacquinot Bay, but his two runs prior he had his chance. On his home track for the first time could spark the necessary improvement required to greet the judge.
Roughie: Rowie (Best Odds: $8.00) finished fourth in that Jacquinot Bay race, and he was held behind the tiring leaders. He is a horse that needs to go through his gears without any hassle eg his brilliant first up win. Beautifully in at the weights after the claim, and looks hard to beat.
