Keane on wrong side of scales

Gold Coast apprentice Patrick Keane has once again found himself on the wrong side of stewards in Brisbane.

Keane, who weighed in light last week, was fined $200 for not attending the official weigh-in after finishing fifth on Looped in the Mullins Lawyers Class Six Plate (1600m).

Keane said he had mistakenly gone to the scales area near the jockeys’ room to weigh in after Royal Reign finished last in a field of five.

Jockeys of the first five horses home are required to weigh in at a designated area in the enclosure after each race.

Stewards also questioned the apprentice’s tactics aboard Looped who tailed the field in the early stages before finishing fifth to Demanding Miss.

Stewards maintained Keane erred in the early and middle stages by not taking up a more forward position when it became available.

However, he escaped penalty because of his inexperience.

Keane is due to start a one month suspension on Sunday night after weighing in light aboard Gold Rating at Eagle Farm a week ago.

The Michael Nolan-trained Gold Rating was disqualified as the winner of the Sky Racing Handicap with the race subsequently awarded to well-supported favourite Mr Light Blue.

Keane weighed out at 55.60kg but when he returned after the race he weighed 54.76kg.
