Jimmystar will be looking to cap off a stellar autumn with another Group One title as he lines up in the final elite-level race of the Sydney carnival this Saturday at Randwick.
The explosive-finishing gelding, already the Oakleigh Plate champion, is set to contest the All Aged Stakes (1400m), and his connections are hopeful for a fast-run race to bring out his best.
Ciaron Maher’s assistant trainer, Johann Gerard-Dubord, said the race shape will be critical for Jimmystar, who relies on a strong tempo to unleash his trademark late burst.
“Because of the way he races, he wants tempo,” Gerard-Dubord said.
“He doesn’t need cover, he does relax well, but because of where he ends up in his races he needs tempo.”
A late-maturing son of Per Incanto, Jimmystar has stepped up this campaign, delivering career-best performances across his recent runs.
He launched his preparation with a brilliant victory in the Oakleigh Plate (1100m), followed by a strong placing in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, and an eye-catching fourth after coming from last in the T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
In the T J Smith, the top finishers were on the speed early, while Jimmystar came from the rear to finish strongly, earning praise for his closing sectionals.
“He was very good last start to do what he did from where he was, and his sectionals showed that,” Gerard-Dubord said.
“The 1400 will be no issue. He has come through the run very well.
“With that turn of foot over 1400, if he’s not too far off them at the top of the straight he will be right there.”
The All Aged Stakes field is headlined by T J Smith Stakes winner Briasa, who has drawn barrier four, while last year’s winner, Magic Time, starts from gate seven.
Jimmystar will break from barrier six with regular rider Ethan Brown aboard for what could be another big performance.
