Gringotts appeals as Winx Stakes 2025 knockout

Star mare Via Sistina will command plenty of attention in the Winx Stakes, but jockey Tommy Berry believes conditions could play perfectly into the hands of Gringotts as he chases a second Group 1 success.

Gringotts resumes in Saturday’s Randwick feature, having claimed his first elite-level win in the George Ryder Stakes (1500m) during the autumn.

Berry is confident the 1400m trip of the Winx Stakes is tailor-made for the gelding, particularly given Sydney’s wet weather this week, with Randwick rated a heavy 10 and more rain forecast through Friday.

“He has trialled really well on two occasions now and if you look at a lot of the horses going to the Winx, the 1400 isn’t going to be their preferred trip,” Berry said.

“But his first-up record is great, his 1400-metre record is great and it’s right in his sweet spot.

“He has ticked that wet track box off as well.

“He’s going awesome. I’m really looking forward to him.”

Gringotts boasts an impressive record at the distance, with five wins and four seconds from 10 starts over 1400m. He has also won three of four attempts on soft tracks, while his recent Gosford trial win came in heavy conditions, suggesting he can handle testing going.

The Winx Stakes has drawn a star-studded field of 12, including nine Group 1 winners. Alongside Via Sistina are stablemates Fangirl and Aeliana, as well as Ceolwulf and Gringotts’ barn mate, Australian Cup hero Light Infantry Man.
