Flemington set to host the 2026 Cox Plate

The 2026 Cox Plate will break tradition, with Flemington set to host the iconic race for the first time in its history.

This year’s edition will be the final one staged at Moonee Valley before the track undergoes an extensive redevelopment and redesign that will see it closed for nearly two years.

The decision followed an Expression of Interest process, with Racing Victoria and the Moonee Valley Racing Club ultimately awarding hosting rights to Flemington. The Melbourne Racing Club had also put forward a bid, proposing to run the race after the Caulfield Cup Carnival.

The 2026 Cox Plate meeting at Flemington will take place the week before the Melbourne Cup Carnival, headlined by a nine-race program that also features the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m), which provides the winner with a coveted Golden Ticket into the Melbourne Cup.

Officials said wagering, crowd capacity, engagement and commercial considerations were all part of the evaluation, with Flemington deemed the venue best positioned to maximise attendance and turnover while maintaining the Cox Plate’s elite reputation.

Victoria Racing Club chief executive Kylie Rogers said the announcement was a landmark moment for Flemington.

“This will be an historic occasion, bringing tens of thousands of Australians together to enjoy the day,” Rogers said.

“We thank Racing Victoria, the Moonee Valley Racing Club and our commercial partners for their collaboration and can’t wait to see the collective vision for a Cox Plate at Flemington come to life.

“It sets the scene for an unforgettable spring at Flemington, where the world’s best come together.”

Moonee Valley Racing Club chief executive Michael Browell emphasised the significance of the shift.

“The MVRC looks forward to partnering with the VRC to create an exceptional event for members of both clubs and racegoers as we showcase Australia’s Best Race at Flemington,” Browell said.
