Golden Rose 2017: Rank outsider backed to cause upset

Punters are looking away from the obvious when it comes to the Group l Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill this Saturday.

Menari, or ‘Menari The Ferrari’, has dominated the key lead ups to the race, bolting up a fortnight back in the Run To The Rose, smashing the clock and comfortably holding his rivals. Punters however don’t think he can replicate these efforts from the barrier which has seen his odds turn out from $2.00 to $2.15.

Most see the main threat as the Ciaron Maher trained Merchant Navy, but he has been friendless in early, betting out to $8.50 from $7.50, despite drawing well and being proven at 1400m.

Pariah, who ran a game second to Menari in that race mentioned above, did get to $6.50 from $6.00 but has tightened back to his opening price.

Outside of the key runners two outsiders have also been backed with Trapeze Artist shortening from $41 into $34, perhaps with the key being drawing wide to get clear room and the blinkers going on.

The other runner to have support is the rank outsider in the race ‘Diamond Tathagata’ who has firmed from his huge odds of $151 into $101 with punters hoping for a big upset in the feature race across the country.
