Canterbury horse racing tips – 28/12/2013

Canterbury will host a rare Saturday afternoon program this weekend, with the last event appearing to be the race to watch given impressive last start winner Messene will step out again.

Race One: Tab iPad App Plate 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: Given she has the race experience, I’m putting Dual Star on top. Thought she ran really well on debut at Rosehill behind Memorial, then fought on doggidly when on the pace and finishing a close second to Mossfun in the Inglis Nursery. Drawn the paint here and should get the run of the race.
Big Danger: Big watch on this Jet Spur first starter Jetwings for Gerald Ryan, who bolted in a recent Rosehill barrier trial and is in the market for the Gold Coast Magic Millions, so a win here is required, but he did look very impressive in that trial to suggest he is above average.
Roughie: Nordic Empire couldn’t have been more impressive on debut at Caulfield, sitting deep throughout before charging clear late despite showing signs of inexperience. He is another who is Magic Millions bound and Olly has come up from Melbourne to take the ride.

Race Two: Australian Turf Club Handicap (75) 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: Maysoon for us here. Superb first up winner under the lights here, sitting wide throughout, then has been grabbed on the line at her past couple of outings. She drops back to her own age now, drawn well, stable is in form, and is rock hard fit. Happy to have her.
Big Danger: Watabout put together a nice little record during the Winter which culminated with an unplaced run in the Rosebud behind Eurozone. Has trialled once to bring him back to fitness, and won it quite nicely. Has the claim for Ichikawa, and although drawn wide, should roll forward and take beating.
Roughie: If she was on a bigger track, I’d be putting Fiftyshadesofgrey on top. She worked home very strongly here over the 1250m last time out behind Kasiano Lad, a real up and comer. She’ll drift back again and charge home late, but there does appear to be some speed here, so she should get her chance.

Race Three: 2014 ATC Membership On Sale Handicap (74) 1900m Form Guide

Back Me: Really keen on Big Memory here for Tony McEvoy. Has taken him a little while to hit his straps down under, but his two runs this preparation have been excellent, in particular his last start second to Stradale where he sat a fair way back and worked home strongly. He looks ready to win here for me.
Big Danger: Another one who looks ready to win is Reigning for Team Cummings. He got to the line really nicely at Kensington behind Solemn, beaten less than a length. That race is far superior to what he faces here, but has to rise 5kg in weight, which is the steadier, but he should have upside and Shinn, known for his patience, is the perfect man for this horse.
Roughie: Chris Waller has a very good record with these stayers who trial during the week and race on the following Saturday. Hoylonny is one that springs to mind. Richie’s Bikkies resumed at Warwick Farm and wasn’t too bad. Trialled on Tuesday and wasn’t asked to do anything, but I liked the way he looked, so an improved showing is definitely on the cards with Olly on board.

Race Four: Become An ATC Sponsor Handicap (75) 1100m Form Guide

Back Me: Really keen on the Dubbo gelding Shiraz, who came back to racing in sparkling order with a thumping win on his home track a few weeks ago, running very fast time over this distance with nearly 60kg. Drops to 54.5kg here, drawn to get a gun run and Peter Nestor doesn’t send them to town for a sightseeing adventure.
Big Danger: Curfew was heavily backed first up at Hawkesbury and didn’t give his supporters an ounce of concern, leading all the way to win effortlessly. Rises to city grade, but like Nestor, Darren Smith comes to town to win.
Roughie: Kristy Lee won impressively three back, but in her two subsequent wins, she has been okay without being spectacular. Drops big time in depth here if you take out the two mentioned above, and the booking of Olly is a huge plus.

Race Five: Tab Rewards Handicap (80) 1250m Form Guide

Back Me: Knoydart on top for me. Has promised to deliver good success, but just hasn’t put it together on race day. That may just about to be changed based on the way he trialled the other day at Rosehill, winning by two lengths in good time. My only concern is that he is $2.25…for me, that is way too short. Wait until raceday and you will get better than that, maybe $3.
Big Danger: Bit surprised to see there is $7 offered for Field Marshall given he has some big wraps on him for the future. He has had no luck at his past two, getting caught wide with no cover. If he can get a drag up here, and be cuddled for the straight, he can blow these away.
Roughie: Full Blast looks the real blowout horse at good odds. Loved his first up run here behind Inside Job in a race which carried some depth. He is fitter now and has won second up in the past. If they go hard in front, he can run over the top of them.

Race Six: Canterbury Park Handicap (80) 1250m Form Guide

Back Me: Best each-way bet across Australia this weekend for me in Arrowette, who looks so well placed by Robert Pearse. She was a game winner here two back, then did all the donkey work to set the speed here last start and was only caught in the last two strides. Tumbles down to 52kg, should get a soft lead, and apart from Honourable Aussie, there is no horse that races better at Canterbury than Arrowette.
Big Danger: I’ve Got The Looks bolted in off a freshen up on her home track at Warwick Farm, then has been luckless at her next two at Kensington. Shinn takes the ride now, drawn to get a beaut sit off the pace and does have a sharp turn of foot. Looks the main threat.
Roughie: I liked Recoinage at Kensington a fortnight back and she was ok after doing some work early. Fitter now, back to a track races well on and performs well second up.

Race Seven: Hyland Race Colours Handicap (75) 1550m Form Guide

Back Me: How on earth this can be called a city race stuns me. Pathetic field, filled with milk drinkers. Going for the Taree gelding Onemore Eightmore, who hasn’t won this campaign, but hasn’t been too far away in some handy races, including last start here when a close up fifth to Absolutelyanything. Has got the weight pull on his rivals here and drops 5kg in weight himself from last start.
Big Danger: Through process of elimination, Sir Berus goes in as the danger. He was very ordinary at Kensington, then was a bit unlucky last week at Rosehill where he got severely checked halfway home and lost all momentum. The concern is that this will be his third run in a fortnight. But he is the one with the ability to win.
Roughie: Black Jag, a 2400m galloper, showed some dash fresh at Wyong and worked home strongly to finish third to Barachello. He’ll be better for the outing, rises in distance, and has upside compared to some of these.

Race Eight: December Handicap 1550m Form Guide

Back Me: The more you put on Messene, the more you will get back. Simple as that for me here, because he appears to be a future stakes winner based on how classy he looked when winning first up at Kensington, running unbelievably quick time. Drawn wide, but Macca should take care of that…just looks an absolute moral.
Big Danger: Western Symbol wasn’t too bad in the Villiers I thought after missing the start. He got back, forced out to the carpark on the turn yet worked home quite nicely and was only beaten four lengths. He is a good horse on his day and he can run himself into form here as he steps up in distance further on this prep.
Roughie: $6.50 for the place with Honourable Aussie seems a great price. He trialled very well prior to his first up flop, where he was ridden far too close to the speed, then was ridden cold last week and hit the line nicely. As I said earlier, he is a track specialist who always runs well here. Must for exotics.
