Blue Dream’s Stakes race test follows Kyneton maiden win

Trainer Grahame Begg is aiming to achieve a notable feat for the second consecutive week, preparing a promising filly to progress from a maiden victory on debut to a Stakes race.

Last Saturday, Aroused made the leap from a maiden win at Ballarat to a close second in the Listed Crockett Stakes at Flemington.

This Saturday, Begg’s charge Blue Dream, a three-year-old filly, will contest the Group 3 The Vanity over 1400 metres.

Blue Dream made a winning debut at Kyneton on October 8, coming from last under jockey Jordan Childs.

Begg finds Kyneton a suitable track for inexperienced gallopers, particularly for those needing to overcome tardy starts.

“She jumped in the air when he let them go,” Begg stated. “The plan wasn’t to be back last, so he had to take his medicine because she drew wide. She stood the leaders up a very big start and put up a bit of a phenomenal effort to get up in the last stride. Kyneton, it’s a good surface and that 1200-metres start, there is a good run down the back straight, so I like going there, especially for a young horse having their first start.”

The trainer reported that the daughter of Justify has responded well in her training since her debut but indicated that this race would likely be her final start before a spell.

He anticipates that Blue Dream will benefit from increased distances as she matures and is keen to see her perform in the autumn.

As Blue Dream is owned by Yulong, Begg emphasized the importance of securing Black Type early in her career for her future value.

“It’s a big step going from a Kyneton maiden to running in a Stakes race, but we feel she’s a filly with some promise,” Begg added. “The further she steps out in distance, because she’s by Justify, that will suit her. She’s a plain looking girl, a homebred of Yulong’s, but she’s got some talent there and if she can get some Black Type, all the better.”

Betting markets for The Vanity are now open at various sports betting platforms.
