News:

Flamberge is set for a defence of the Group One Goodwood having been being freshened since his TJ Smith Stakes failure.

Now with Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, the former Peter Moody-trained sprinter has added the Oakleigh Plate and William Reid Stakes this season to his win in Adelaide’s feature sprint.

His third Group One win in the William Reid came at Moody’s final meeting before he started a six-month suspension and closed his training business.

Raced by prominent owner-breeder David Moodie, Flamberge was given his chance in Australia’s richest open-grade sprint in Sydney.

But he failed to beat a runner home in the $2.5 million TJ Smith (1200m) won by Chautauqua at Randwick on April 2 at his first start for Ellerton and Zahra nine days after the William Reid.

Ellerton confirmed Flamberge was on track to run in The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday week.

“He seems all right. He’s had a good freshen-up from the debacle in Sydney,” Ellerton said.

“He’s going to trial here at Flemington on Friday and hopefully he’s good to go to the Goodwood in a fortnight.”

Flamberge is expected to be better suited in the Goodwood having had a decent gap between runs.

“He had won on the Thursday night, he swapped stables, and he’s better with his races spaced,” Ellerton said, reflecting on the TJ Smith Stakes.

“So it’s probably a run best forgotten.”

Former Singapore star Super One will also be aimed at the Goodwood after his impressive win in Saturday’s Group Three McKay Stakes at Morphettville, his first start for Lee and Anthony Freedman.

Super One was the champion juvenile in Singapore last year when trained by Michael Freedman who is now resident at Rosehill in Sydney.
