20/11/2013 Horse Racing Tips – Canterbury racecourse

A strong seven race card will be run and won at Canterbury on Wednesday, and with sunny weather forecast for the day, the track should improve, maybe to a dead/slow surface.

Race One: Australian Turf Club Handicap (64) 1900m Form Guide

Back Me: Aztec Rose missed the start again last start when a fast finishing second to Strace over 1800 metres at Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day. The drop in class suits, as should the rise in journey and the wet track.
Big Danger: Mutajara contested another 1800 metre race on the same card and also was a game second behind Vitello, who is an above average galloper for Gai Waterhouse who would have the stablemate Aztec Rose covered, so this gelding is a definite danger.
Roughie: Roving Red has steadily improved with each run under his belt and he got a reward for his improvement with a solid maiden win at Hawkesbury. Rises a bit in depth, but has upside and is in the mix.

Race Two: Tab.com.au Handicap 1250m Form Guide

Back Me: Chris Waller has a remarkable strike rate with horses who are on the seven day back up, so for that reason we like The Alfonso, who savaged the line last week at Warwick Farm. Nash takes over, drawn well…hard to beat.
Big Danger: Like the fact that Flak Jacket is coming back in distance. He wasn’t suited last start over the 1400 metres where the leader crawled in front and sprinted home. From the good draw, he can sit much closer to the tempo and figure in the finish.
Roughie: Occasion was heavily backed at Hawkesbury last time out and didn’t let her supporters down, winning well from the wide barrier. Barrier one here and on the limit will see her be in the money.

Race Three: Congrats @ Vinery Maiden Plate 1100m Form Guide

Back Me: Supreme Joy will start near odds on thanks to her two runs back in the winter, which resulted in placings behind Contrite Heart and Stocky, both handy gallopers. Loved the way this filly won her latest barrier trial, indicating she’ll be wound up for a first up performance.
Big Danger: Seritza wanted to hang in badly when resuming at Gosford. She led quite comfortably, but didn’t appear to handle the track at all. Her form in the Autumn is excellent for a race like this given she was narrowly beaten by Va Pensiero, a subsequent Group 3 winner, and Vocalise, a Group 1 performer.
Roughie: Zillionaire ran a fair race on debut at Kembla, sitting off the pace and whacking away late. Has since trialled though and looked quite sharp. Drawn the paint with no weight on her back could spark improvement.

Race Four: Hyland Race Colours Handicap (69) 1580m Form Guide

Back Me:
Rolston is yet to win this campaign but gee he is racing well. Beaten just over three lengths at Rosehill two starts back, then last start at Randwick he almost caused a massive upset, but was caught in the last stride by Absalon. Drawn beautifully and doesn’t mind it wet.
Big Danger: Mon Soleil is clearly the best horse in the race, but he hasn’t really set the world on fire this time in, but like earlier, Waller has a knack of getting these horses to win seven days after their last run. At his best, he’d beat these comfortably.
Roughie: 1580 is short of his best, but keep an eye out for Pentometer to work home strongly late. He’ll be winning races this time in over further, so he might need this run, but never put anything beyond Waller.

Race Five: Claire McCabe Memorial Handicap (73) 1900m Form Guide

Back Me: Mossmoney is going to suck me in…again. She was excellent from the back when a close up fourth to Strace at Randwick. Should get through the going without too much hassle and saves her best for Canterbury.
Big Danger: Can’t knock winning form and Strace is the only mare in this race to have that, which does include that win at Randwick on Cup Day. Ran a credible fourth on a slow track on debut, so the soft conditons shouldn’t be too much of a concern. The betting will be the best guide there.
Roughie: Drinks All Round was most disappointing last start, tailing off behind Strace. Nash takes over now and she will appreciate the rise in distance. Wouldn’t leave her out of exotics.

Race Six: Big Sports Breakfast Handicap (70) 1100m Form Guide

Back Me: Best bet on the program for me in the shape of Not Doubtful, a mare trained at my home town of Tuncurry by Terry Evans. She has been up for a long time, but is racing so well. She should have bolted in last time out over this track/distance behind She’s A Stalker. Never ever got a crack at them in the straight and was hard held on the line. Once she got out, it was just after the finish and she was a couple of lengths in front. Very, very keen on her chances.
Big Danger: Choisir La Rouge is first up here after a two campaign in the Autumn which resulted in a win over the 1200 metres and an unplaced run at Warwick Farm. Loved the way she trialled last week, winning comfortably under no pressure. Big watch.
Roughie: Holy Delusions ran some good races last time in, but she looked tired at the end of the campaign and was on very heavy tracks. Resumes here off the back of two barrier trials, with the latest of those being on October 29 where she finished second and looked quite forward.

Race Seven: Canterbury Park Handicap 1250m Form Guide

Back Me: Hard Liquor was the subject of a good betting move first up, but didn’t fire after missing the start, although his closing sectionals were good against the pattern. In form rider, drawn well, hard to beat.
Big Danger: Darley gelding Chiaroscuro is first up after a close up fourth on the stand alone program at Hawkesbury behind stablemate Petrify, who has peformed well since. Unbeaten first up and should get the gun run.
Roughie: Subarc was a good winner two back at Canberra, then wasn’t suited by the slow pace last time out at Goulburn behind Glad You Called. Shouldn’t be too far away from the inside and is a must for exotics.

Best Bet: Not Doubtful

Next Best: The Alfonso

Best Roughie: Rolston
