Vics take first innings pts against Tas

Ashes squad members George Bailey and James Faulkner got limited batting practice on day three of Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria at Bellerive.

Tigers captain Bailey, who will make his Test debut when the series against England begins at the Gabba next week, made 37 and allrounder Faulkner just 14.

Tasmania were in strife, reaching 6-164 in their first innings at tea on day three, still 219 behind the Bushrangers.

Bailey at least faced 91 balls, hitting five fours, before chipping Dan Christian to short midwicket with the score 5-115.

The Australian Twenty20 captain, who forced his way into the Test squad with a massive one-day series in India, would have been hoping for more after being involved in a disastrous runout with Alex Doolan.

Bailey left his teammate stranded after calling a quick single on the final ball before lunch, the in-form Doolan sent on his way by a Glenn Maxwell direct hit for 41.

The skipper had already pipped the elegant right-hander, who looked in superb touch in smacking seven boundaries, to the Australian squad.

Batting at No.6, Faulkner faced 43 deliveries before he was bowled by Christian at 6-130.

Tim Paine will resume after the break on 19, with Evan Gulbis 18.

The Bushrangers were all out for 383 on Friday morning, losing 4-44 as they chased quick runs in an attempt to force a result to the rain-disrupted match.

Skipper Matthew Wade top-scored with 119, while Christian chipped in with a quickfire 43 before Tigers spinner Xavier Doherty (4-62) and paceman Adam Maher (3-88) mopped up the tail.
