MacGill unsure about Champions League

Veteran leg-spinner Stuart MacGill could make the last appearance of his cricket comeback in Saturday’s Big Bash League final at the WACA Ground.

The Sydney Sixer will take on the Perth Scorchers in the decider but MacGill doesn’t yet know if, at 40, he can maintain his fitness or desire for the Twenty20 Champions League in India this September.

The former Test spinner has taken six wickets, including one in Sunday’s semi-final win over the Hobart Hurricanes which qualified the Sixers for the Champions League.

But MacGill says continuing his comeback beyond the Big Bash might be a step too far.

“The boys were talking about the Champions League last night,” MacGill told reporters in Sydney on Monday.

“It’s not until September so that’s a long way off for someone who’s going to be 41 at that stage.”

If MacGill does commit to the Champions League he believes he will at least benefit from having more time to prepare for that tournament than he had for the Big Bash, where he was only unveiled as a Sixers player in December.

“Because the fact the tournament is based in September I’ve got a fair chance to get serious,” he said.

“I had a six-week lead-in for the Sixers, now I’ve got a six-month lead-in time. Maybe I can be in some real shape and see if I can give it a proper shake-up.”

MacGill’s focus in the immediate future is on defeating the Scorchers and securing the Big Bash crown for the Sixers.

And he feels the team’s one-run win over the Perth team at the SCG last Wednesday could be a crucial confidence builder going into the game.

“They know we beat them, they know we didn’t have a full team and they also know it’s highly likely Mitchell Starc will be playing again,” said MacGill, before adding the 21-year-old left-arm quick was unlucky to miss out on a starting spot in this week’s fourth Test against India.

“He’s electric at the moment,” he said of Starc, who took 3-28 in the Sixers’ win at the SCG.
