CA monitor workloads for Test series

Cricket Australia (CA) team performance manager Pat Howard is urging Australia’s players in the upcoming Champions League Twenty20 tournament to be accountable to their Test teammates ahead of the November series against South Africa.

Australia’s Test series against the Proteas starts on November 9 at the Gabba, preceded by the CL T20 in South Africa which will feature seven of Australia’s Test players.

Mike Hussey, Ben Hilfenhaus (Chennai Super Kings), David Warner (Delhi Daredevils), and Pat Cummins, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Starc and Shane Watson (Sydney Sixers) will all be on show in the event from October 9-28.

Howard says CA is conscious of the need to prepare players for red-ball cricket, which means not just giving bowlers extra work in the nets but also monitoring batting loads.

The players have already pledged to each other the need to be accountable this summer.

CA bowling coach Ali De Winter will head to South Africa with the Australian players following their World T20 commitments in Colombo over the next few days including Friday night’s knockout semi-final clash with West Indies.

“It’s not as much about conscience,” Howard told AAP this week.

“We get them to enter a lot of data straight into a database on a daily basis no matter whether they are in the world.

“We’ve driven effectively a data-based solution to be able to say if you’re playing Team A, B, C, D or E, here’s your bowling loads, here’s your sleep patterns, here’s your wellness issues.

“Yes they’re accountable. Yes those numbers are clearly transparent to everybody in Australian cricket so that we can give that seamless delivery.

“It’s not someone’s word. It’s entered straight in, measured, monitored and no we don’t want people to guess because we want people to be accountable.

“The science can help you make decisions.”

CA officials are anxious to avoid a repeat of the 2010 incident in which fast bowler Doug Bollinger broke down during a Test in India and cost Australia the match after rushing straight from a CL T20 series.

“The batsmen, we need to make sure they’re facing a red ball as well in the lead-up to the Test matches,” Howard said.
