Aussies thrash New Zealand in T20 warm-up

Ageless wrist-spinner Brad Hogg claimed 3-23 as Australia bowled New Zealand out for 83 to score a 56-run win in their World Twenty20 warm-up game in Colombo on Saturday.

Openers Shane Watson (27) and David Warner (24), No.6 Glenn Maxwell (24) and wicketkeeper Matt Wade (25 not out) all got starts in Australia’s 6-139.

In reply, the Black Caps were never in the hunt despite the small ground, as Australia’s quicks were ruthless in tandem with the 41-year-old Hogg’s mysterious wrist spin.

Watson took 2-7 off three overs in a remarkable performance while fellow paceman Clint McKay, in his comeback game following a hamstring injury, claimed 2-14 off three overs.

Teenager Pat Cummins was also too hot for the Kiwis with 2-13 off three overs.

Watson trapped Rob Nicol lbw for second-ball duck in the opening over.

McKay struck in his first over to remove Martin Guptill for five, while Cummins made a breakthrough with his first delivery to dismiss BJ Whatling caught behind as New Zealand slumped to 3-8.

Ross Taylor (22) was caught at square leg off Hogg at 4-39 in the ninth over.

Hogg bowled James Franklin two overs later and Nathan McCullum made two before he became McKay’s second victim at 6-56.

The Black Caps were bowled out in the 17th over.

Skipper George Bailey’s men have a second warm-up game against England on Monday.

Australia rested in-form quick Mitchell Starc and middle-order batsman David Hussey was also left out for a second successive game as Australia continue to tinker with the idea of playing allrounders Dan Christian and Maxwell.

No.6 batsman Cameron White made just eight runs to go with the disappointing 20 in three hits in the recent T20 series against Pakistan in Dubai.

Both teams played a one-over eliminator after Saturday’s game to have a crack at the tie-breaker format, which Australia also experienced in game two in Dubai last week, losing 12 runs to 11.

In Saturday’s extra over, Cummins claimed 1-1 in a nerveless effort from a 19-year-old before Australia’s Warner and Watson took 13 runs from a five-ball over from Tim Southee.
