Sydney, Melbourne In ABL Showdown

Melbourne and Sydney will rekindle an old rivalry this week, with the Aces and Blue Sox doing battle in the Australian Baseball League post-season for a chance to reach the championship series.

The winner of the best-of-five series, which will be hosted by Melbourne starting Wednesday, will earn the right to face defending champions Perth for this year’s title.

The Aces will fancy their chances, having pushed Perth to the limit in week one of the post-season before going down 3-1, while Sydney knocked out last year’s runners-up Adelaide with a 3-1 series win.

But it is the Blue Sox who took the honours in the regular season, winning six of their nine clashes this year.

The Blue Sox will need to contain Melbourne’s hot bats, with former major leaguer Justin Huber posting an exceptional .789 on-base percentage in week one of the post-season.

Along with Huber, Sydney’s highly rated pitching roster will also have to contend with home run heroes Elliot Biddle and Brad Harman.

The Blue Sox have arguably the league’s most impressive bullpen, and manager Kevin Boles will be hoping for repeat performances from Matthew Williams and Dae-Sung Koo this week.

The pair were near unplayable against the Bite, combining to give up just two hits and no runs over five innings when called upon.
