Wines in frame to captain AFL club Port

Port Adelaide captain Travis Boak is battling to overcome a hamstring injury, with Ollie Wines set to lead the AFL club for the first time this weekend.

Boak has had scans on his injured left hamstring and is in doubt for Port’s away trip to play Brisbane on Saturday.

“We will take a pretty conservative approach there, there will be no risk involved,” Port assistant coach Michael Voss told reporters on Monday.

“He has had scans but we’ll actually have everything together this afternoon after we get the chance to talk to the physios and the doctors.

“I don’t think he’s had too many soft tissue injuries so it’s a little bit foreign to him in terms of how he deals with it.”

Vice-captain Wines is in the frame to lead Port for the first time.

“He will step up pretty well, I think he will be pretty excited by it,” Voss said of Wines.

“Boaky already reckons he’ (Wines) has already taken over on Monday, he’s saying ‘wait until everything comes in before you start getting too excited’.

“He has had a great month, Ollie, he seems to be really stepping his game up to the next level.

“But the great thing about Ollie is he has got such a great temperament, I don’t think he will treat it any differently.

“If anything, hopefully the boys get a little bit excited for him and I know he will bring the energy for us.”

Port expect half-back Hamish Hartlett, who was a late withdrawal from last Friday night’s win against Carlton because of a thigh injury, to return against the Lions.

And key defender Jack Hombsch is also pressing for selection after missing the past fortnight because of a knee injury.
