AFL News:
Port Adelaide’s ruck crisis is over, with coach Ken Hinkley declaring Paddy Ryder will return from injury against West Coast in round seven.
The Power have made do with a committee of key position players in Charlie Dixon, Dougal Howard and Justin Westhoff since Ryder went down with an achilles injury in the AFL’s opening round.
Hinkley’s men were on the wrong end of some lopsided hitout counts during Ryder’sabsence but they welcome back their star ruckman with a 4-2 record.
“You got that right,” Hinkley replied with a broad smile when he was asked on Saturday if Ryder would make his return against the Eagles at Optus Stadium.
“All Australian ruckman … I’m not going to waste too much time.
“He’s coming in.
“It’s important to get him back out there playing. We’ve seen what Nic Naitanui has been able to do (for West Coast) and Paddy is similar for us.
“He gives us an enormous amount of drive, not just in the ruck but around the ground.”
Port bounced back from successive losses to defeat North Melbourne – 15.12 (102) to 10.9 (69) – win in front of 17,617 fans at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Dixon shouldered most of the ruck burden against the Roos and got the better of in-form big man Todd Goldstein.
But the Power forward will resume his customary role inside attacking 50 against the Eagles.
“I’m sure he’ll be happy about that but I thought he competed really strongly, albeit Goldstein had a couple of significant hitouts at times,” Hinkley said.
“I’m sure they’ll all be happy to see Paddy come back … they’d much prefer not to have to play in the ruck too much but as I said all the way through, that was our best option.
“We’ve managed to get through basically six games without Paddy now so we know we can get it done.
“If we don’t have Paddy we can get it done … that’s important.”
Chad Wingard suffered a hamstring injury against the Roos and will have scans to determine how long he will be sidelined.
