Play suspended in AFLW game in Sydney

A storm has forced the players from the field in Friday’s AFLW match between Greater Western Sydney and Carlton at Sydney’s Drummoyne Oval.

Thunder, lightning and heavy rain lashed the ground and forced play to be suspended at quarter time, with the game scheduled to resume at 7.55pm (AEST).

The Giants were leading 1.0 (6) to 0.4 (4) at the time..

Phoebe McWillams kicked the only goal, her fourth of the season.

It’s not the first time adverse weather has forced a delay in an AFLW match.

It also occurred last year in a clash between Melbourne and Brisbane at Casey Fields.

The tough conditions made it hard to gauge the effectiveness of the measures introduced for round two, which were aimed at easing congestion around the ball.
