Hawks re-sign triple-premiership winger

Triple-premiership winger Isaac Smith has signed a contract extension that ties him to Hawthorn until the end of the 2020 AFL season.

The 27-year-old, who has played 135 games for the Hawks, effectively turned his back on any free agency opportunities in agreeing to the deal.

“It was a pretty easy process … I think it only took two or three weeks, so it all happened pretty quickly and it was pretty smooth,” Smith said of contract negotiations.

“It’s nice to know that the Hawthorn Football Club want me around.

“I’m very excited about the prospect of the next four years because we’ve got a great young list here.

“A lot of them are starting to mature and turn into really good footballers … it’s exciting times.”

Smith was selected 19th overall at the 2010 draft and played in Hawthorn’s flag-winning teams in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

His new deal comes soon after the Hawks re-signed Norm Smith medallist Cyril Rioli until the end of the 2020 season.

The moves follow a tumultuous trade period that saw veterans Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis depart for West Coast and Melbourne respectively.
