Hannebery filthy on himself for AFL error

Sydney star Dan Hannebery is kicking himself after Hawthorn captain Jarryd Roughead booted the match-winning goal in Friday night’s AFL thriller.

Hannebery said the way he manned the mark as Roughead lined up for goal was “another stupid error” by the Swans in the last term at the SCG.

Roughead’s goal was the last score of the match with a minute left and the Hawks won by six points.

The Hawks skipper marked a pass from Ty Vickery on the 50m arc.

Dane Rampe was the closest Swan to Roughead, but he went back to the goalsquare and Hannebery manned the mark.

Inexplicably, Hannebery stood a few metres inside the 50m line, putting Roughead closer to goal when he took his kick.

While Roughead’s booming kick easily cleared the goal line, Hannebery’s blunder made it an easier shot.

Hannebery told Fox Sports he did not clarify with Rampe or the umpire where he should stand the mark.

“I didn’t man the mark, that two or three metres, as I should have,” he said.

“It’s a clear error of judgement from my point of view and I’m extremely disappointed in myself.

“It’s another stupid error, like a few different things in the last quarter that shouldn’t happen and it’s really disappointing.”

Hannebery was high among Sydney’s best with 35 possessions, continuing his strong return to form.

Coach John Longmire was loath to criticise his players for their late errors, given their second-half rally.

“We did some things we’d probably do better if we had another opportunity to, in the last few minutes,” he said
