Geelong Cats vs Essendon Bombers Preview
There will be a finals-like feel in the air on Saturday in old Geelong town.
The Cats are back in the eight following last week’s percentage boosting win over North Melbourne, while the Bombers are suddenly in the top four conversation after knocking off the Crows in upset fashion.
Kardinia Park has been a bogey ground for the Bombers dating right back to the 90s, but there’s been plenty to like about Essendon’s slick brand of footy and ball movement in recent weeks.
The switch to Zach Merrett as captain has worked wonders for the Dons, not to mention Peter Wright’s terrific form up forward since returning from injury.
The Cats still have a lengthy injury list, but there’s a chance Jeremy Cameron could return this week if he passes concussion protocol.
Even so, Geelong is the rightful favourite given the home ground advantage, but the Dons do represent good value at the line if they can stick to the game plan that has been working so well.
Brad Scott’s young list has done a terrific job putting pressure on opposing defences, moving the ball in fast fashion with a strong system down back to compliment.
Over the last calendar year, the Bombers have gone 9-5 at the line as the underdog, and if they can rely on some big performances from their core leaders in Merrett, Nic Martin, and Matt Guelfi, they could at least keep this close.
