Docker Blakely dropped for sneaky surf

Fremantle have dropped Connor Blakely for Sunday’s AFL clash with St Kilda after the young midfielder chucked a sickie in order to go surfing.

Blakely was allowed to leave training early on Wednesday after complaining of illness.

But instead of resting up, Blakely travelled to his home town of Bunbury, before hitting the waves at Yallingup for a surf.

And in an added blow to Fremantle, star wingman Stephen Hill (calf) and Josh Deluca (ankle) have also been ruled out of the match at Domain Stadium.

Fremantle football operations manager Chris Bond said Blakely had made an uncharacteristic error of judgement.

“As a respected, young and emerging player at Fremantle, Connor knows the uncompromising standards that all of our players are required to adhere to,” Bond said.

“And in this instance, Connor has not been at the required level.”

Blakely has been one of Fremantle’s best players this season,.

The 21-year-old has averaged 24 disposals a game in a campaign where he has also shown his talent as a tagger.

Earlier this week, Blakely signed a two-year contract extension tying him to the club until the end of 2019.
