It’s a game Carlton fans have had circled on their calendar since the fixture was released, and following recent developments, it’s likely one that has the entire fan base very nervous.
Collingwood famously ended the Blues’ season last August with a one-point, come-from-behind win, a loss Michael Voss swore his side would learn and grow from heading into 2023.
So far, the Blues have shown brief signs of maturity, but after suffering back-to-back losses to the Lions and Dogs, questions are starting to be asked of the second-year coach with the club still a long way away from flag contention.
Talent-wise, Carlton has to be better. Harry McKay’s minimal impact last week was staggering from a key forward that once was once a Coleman winner, while Patrick Cripps looks a shell of his former Brownlow-winning self.
On the other side sit Collingwood, a team in sparkling form that shows no signs of slowing down.
The Pies rolled to a fifth-straight win over GWS last week, Jamie Elliott kicking three goals and Nick Daicos racking up a casual 41 disposals.
There isn’t a team more in sync than the Pies right now, and although the likes of Brisbane have shown they can be beaten when you force them into turning the ball over, it’s hard to see a Carlton team low on confidence executing that same game plan.
Perhaps the most concerning aspect of this game is the inside 50 numbers.
The Pies continue to get the ball forward with ease, while Carlton – now ranked 14th in inside 50s – continue to struggle.
