AFL Premiership 2022

$4.50    Melbourne

The Premiers have been clear flag favourites since the market went up before last year’s Grand Final. They opened at $5.50 and have been cut to $4.50 with over 30 per cent of the Premiership hold.

              Top 4:   $1.60    Final 8: $1.10

To Miss Top 8:   $6.75    Most Losses: $251

$6.50    Western Bulldogs

The Bulldogs are the second best backed side to claim the title with 17 per cent of the share despite drifting a touch from $6 to $6.50. Punters clearly see Marcus Bontempelli as the key to their season again, judging by the Brownlow Medal market below.

Top 4:   $1.80    Final 8: $1.20

To Miss Top 8:   $4.50    Most Losses: $151

$8.00    Brisbane Lions

The Lions attracted solid money again over the pre-season and were into $7.50 with 9 per cent of the market before being moved back to their opening price of $8. They’re the second best backed team to make the Top 4 with 15 per cent of that hold.

Top 4:   $1.90    Final 8: $1.25

To Miss Top 8:   $3.80    Most Losses: $251

$10        Port Adelaide

While expectations are high, Port have drifted slightly since opening at $9 and are the sixth most supported side with punters despite being on the fourth line of betting.

Top 4:   $2.20    Final 8: $1.35

To Miss Top 8:   $3.15    Most Losses: $151

$11        Richmond

Rock-solid at $11 since opening prices were unveiled, the Tigers have attracted 8 per cent of the Premiership market as the fourth most popular team with TAB punters, narrowly behind the Lions.

Top 4:   $3.00    Final 8: $1.45

To Miss Top 8:   $2.70    Most Losses: $101

$12        Sydney Swans

The best backed side to Miss The Top 8 with 23 per cent of that market, the Swans have moved from $11 to $12 in the Premiership betting.

Top 4:   $3.00    Final 8: $1.50

To Miss Top 8:   $2.55    Most Losses: $67

$13        Geelong

There’s still considerable support for the Cats, especially in the Top 8 and Top 4 markets but they’re $13 after opening at $9 in the Premiership futures. A big season for Jeremy Cameron would make several punters in the Coleman Medal markets below happy.

Top 4:   $2.50    Final 8: $1.35

To Miss Top 8:   $3.15    Most Losses: $251

$15        Greater Western Sydney

Opened at $17 for the flag with money steady across all major markets.

Top 4:   $5.00    Final 8: $1.90

To Miss Top 8:   $1.88    Most Losses: $51

$18        Essendon

The Bombers have attracted plenty of interest from TAB punters. They’re the fifth best backed to win the Premiership, are far and away the best supported in the Top 4 market and are also popular in the Final 8. They’ve been cut from $26 to $18 to claim the Grand Final.

Top 4:   $5.00    Final 8: $2.25

To Miss Top 8:   $1.60    Most Losses: $51

$21        St Kilda

The Saints have stayed firm at the $21 mark and round out the top ten for best backed sides.

Top 4:   $8.00    Final 8: $2.65

To Miss Top 8:   $1.45    Most Losses: $34

$26        Carlton

The Blues have been heavily supported in Top 8 betting and moved from $34 into $26 for the title with early money taken for Sam Walsh to win the Brownlow.

Top 4:   $9.00    Final 8: $3.00

To Miss Top 8:   $1.38    Most Losses: $16

$34        Fremantle

On the drift from $26 with little interest in title betting so far.

Top 4:   $7.00    Final 8: $2.80

To Miss Top 8:   $1.42    Most Losses: $13

$41        West Coast

The Eagles opened at $13 before blowing out significantly to be the fourth worst backed side in Premiership betting. They are also being well backed to finish the season with the Most Losses and are second in that market with 27 per cent of the hold. They’re also second best in the To Miss The 8 betting behind the Swans.

Top 4:   $9.00    Final 8: $3.00

To Miss Top 8:   $1.38    Most Losses: $9.00

$51        Collingwood

In from $67 late last year, punters appear confused about Collingwood’s chances as they’re fourth best backed to Make The 8 and To Miss The 8. They’re also fifth most popular in Top 4 betting.

Top 4:   $16        Final 8: $5.00

To Miss Top 8:   $1.16    Most Losses: $9.00

$67        Hawthorn

Going from $81 into $67 for the flag is one of few positive betting stories for the Hawks as they’re best backed in The Most Losses field with 35 per cent of the market.

Top 4:   $15        Final 8: $5.00

To Miss Top 8:   $1.14    Most Losses: $7.00

$101      Adelaide

The Crows opened at $67 and are equal fourth best backed to Miss The 8 and second worst backed to win the Premiership.

Top 4:   $18        Final 8: $6.00

To Miss Top 8:   $1.12    Most Losses: $6.50

$126      North Melbourne

Started with the outright longest opening odds at $101 and are third most backed for The Most Losses.

Top 4:   $34        Final 8: $9.00

To Miss Top 8:   $1.05    Most Losses: $4.00

$126      Gold Coast

The Suns have blown out from $81 and are the worst backed team to win the Premiership but are fourth best backed for The Most Losses with 12 per cent of that market.

Top 4:   $34        Final 8: $9.00

To Miss Top 8:   $1.05    Most Losses: $4.00

Brownlow Medal

The many who took Carlton’s Sam Walsh to win the Brownlow Medal will be hoping he returns from an ankle injury fit and firing. At a juicy $34 with TAB, The Blues midfielder holds 14 per cent of the market ahead of perennial favourites Marcus Bontempelli and Dustin Martin who have 8 per cent each.

Patrick Cripps is the next most popular with 7 per cent of the share. Of the roughies, Jordan De Goey and Matt Rowell have attracted money at $51 as well as Cam Rayner at $151.

Ollie Wines is TAB’s Brownlow favourite at $7.
