Abusive ‘Pies AFL fan to have counselling

A Collingwood AFL member has agreed to attend counselling after making racial comments during the Magpies’ round-nine game against Sydney at the MCG last Friday night, the club announced on Monday.

The Seven Network’s AFL Game Day on Sunday showed footage of a man screaming about indigenous players during the same game that a 13-year-old girl called Sydney’s dual Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes an “ape”.

“Give it to Goodes because he is black. Give it to (Lewis) Jetta because he is black. It’s indigenous round umpire,” the barracker shouted.

The Magpies released a statement on Monday night saying they had met with a Collingwood member who used “offensive and racially loaded language” during Friday’s game.

“As a result of the meeting, a confidential understanding was reached which will see the man participate in education and counselling related to racial vilification,” the Magpies said.

“An apology to Sydney players Adam Goodes and Lewis Jetta has also been written.”

Goodes received an apology on Saturday from the 13-year-old girl.

The Swans star said he was “gutted” by her comment and called for the girl to be supported and educated.
