Lions stun Cats with AFL win after siren

Brisbane have pulled off one of the upsets of the AFL season by storming home to beat Geelong by five points at the Gabba on Sunday.

The Lions, trailing by 52 points late in the third quarter, reeled in the Cats to claim an amazing 15.13 (103) to 14.14 (98) victory with Ash McGrath kicking the match-winning goal after the siren in his 200th match.

Daniel Rich’s booming goal with less than two minutes to play levelled scores before Geelong’s Tom Hawkins appeared to have got the Cats out of jail with a behind.

But the Lions had enough time for one last attack, finding McGrath who nailed a set shot from outside 50 to seal a remarkable win for the home team.

The result hadn’t looked likely but the Lions booted eight goals to one in the final term to secure their fourth win of the campaign and consign the Cats to just their second defeat.

Simon Black was outstanding for the Lions with 33 disposals while Brent Moloney kicked three goals and was a major player in the Lions’ comeback.

McGrath also booted three goals while Rich bagged two.

Cats skipper Joel Selwood was among the best for the visitors, while Hawkins (three), Steve Johnson (two) and Allen Christensen (two) booted multiple goals.

Johnson will face a nervous wait after a heavy bump on Pearce Hanley left the Irishman groggy in the first quarter.

The triple premiership player wasn’t placed on report but could find himself in hot water when the match review panel looks over the weekend’s action.
